Yep. Tony mentioned he suspects a lot more to be wrong/damaged as a result of the valve stem. he is looking at rings also.

I would take that **** up the flag pole with GM to how incompetent the other dealer was... really... they let that go and thought "oh no big deal"... im guessing, like you, that they did not do any of the work they said they did, yet still billed GM for it. GM should investigate that, but my guess is they will not.
I did send this to my service advisor over email. No response yet.

Even though, the dealer should have pulled the plugs...
IF they did do a compression test as they say they did...clearly they did a half assed job, and probably only tested one cylinder.

I realize I'm showing up at this party a bit late but, after looking at all the video footage, if it was just a guide clearance problem causing all the smoke, those awful plugs and the oily piston tops, the engine also would have been making a ton of valve noise. I mean, you'd notice it instantly.

The one image of piston tops only showed three holes. What did the other five look like? The same? Or dry?

If it wasn't making a lot of valve noise, then I agree with some of the other folks who feel that there may be another problem with the engine such as valve stem seals or an oil control problem with oil rings or cylinder walls.

yeah I heard a bunch of clatter. after talking with my "dealer" for 2 years the noise was deemed normal. My shop literally isolated the 2/4 cylinders side of the motor within in 30 secs. so the other bank has not yet been pulled but I expect that it is not as bad but still I feel GM defaulted to an abused motor with no backup.

Looking at plugs then corresponding heads W/HTH didn't the condition trigger a CEL?
Emissions had to be seriously screwed-up.

update - adjuster came out today and seemed sympathetic that this was an ongoing and reported problem going back 2 years.

My mechanic is submitting his findings tomorrow to GM. He has evidence that there may have been a valve contact on piston in #2/4 cylinders. We will see if that plays out.

I didn't have time to ask about the "out of spec" numbers.

My 2008 Z starting the cold start puff of blue at about 30,000 miles. I was in denial for a while, but then it kept getting more noticeable.
when we checked the heads, had 15 valves that were in great shape and within spec. But one exhaust valve was so loose it rattled around the guide like a pushrod. It was also scored black from the burning oil far up the stem and on the back side of the valve.

..and the irony is it only takes one failure to cost you $16k.. Great job checking all of them, spread the word.

Latest update. Was given verbal that GM will be replacing the motor. Good job GM. I reported problems 2 years ago, and you are now paying 3x to replace what you could repaired. so "just heads" is now the long block. Hope to get the "in writing" tomorrow. Timeline from here... Likely 10 days to receive the parts. We are going to evaluate the clutch condition when he pulls the block, and possibly replace. I am also replacing tires... so for warranty work this is still gonna cost $$

Great news!
no need for tires now unless you need them

but I would highly rexommend a billet throwout bearing retainer sleeve, new slave cylinder, remote clutch bleeder, motor mounts, oil pan baffle (easy to throw in with the motor out), a powerbond or ati harmonic damper

Need the tires. 37k on the original tires - I think that is a kind of a record. (and a testament on how I drive)

tell me more about the parts list... What do they buy me? I already would be getting a new throw out bearing in the clutch install, but what benefit is the billet one, and the rest of it?

I'm thinking an powerbond or ATI voids his new motor warranty...other stuff, why not.

It is a part that is external to the engine oil lubricated engine. so maybe? I will ask Tony though. a smoother running motor would not be a bad thing.

Not to rain on your parade, the shop in Houston that did my heads 3 years ago had 3 sets of heads off Z28 motors and each set had at least one valve out of spec. None of the engines had more than 2000 miles. Wonder if your dealer shop will check the heads on the replacement motor for you?

Yep - no rain here. Just the cold harsh reality of stock LS7 heads being crap. I can suggest checking the valves with a wiggle test, but popping the heads may void that 3/100k warranty. I am torn on this too. I would so rather just get a set of trickflow or other aftermarket heads that don't have the valve geometry issues, but we talked about 2 years and 11 months from now doing the heads since the short block would still be under the warranty. So many permutations of the options.
