Z06 Grippy Tires?
I just got my car about 6 months ago. Don’t know if these mich tires are old or what, but they spin even when I roll into the throttle in 2nd...... this can’t be the best grip. What is the best? I could care less about wear.

If you take a look at the tires you will see this. The first two digits are the week the tire was made, the second two are the year. The above tire was made in the 35th week of 2007. As far as best is concerned, Michelin is generally regarded as such, with their newest offering being the Pilot Sport 4 S, available in factory sizes.

Just a halltech 103 and corsa cat back here. I’m running r888r’s and I can roll quickly into the throttle coming out of first gear with less than 5 feet of spinning, bang second and the tires only chirp... perfect grip for stock power.

Thanks. My tires are dated 4312 or 6.5 years old. So even though the tread is good they are probably hardened and that’s why they are spinning so much. I will replace ASAP. But I will do a bunch of donuts first!!

May help OP (and others) if you state your wheel diameters as well.

6.5 years they will have lost some grip but certainly not end of life. If your budget affords then go ahead and get new tires. Not sure what my wear and use will be like for the 'vette, but in the past sports cars I've had I'd wear them out in ~4 years of summer driving anyway (Here in MN only drive them in the summer). Back then wear ratings were 140-200; with the new greater ratings of summer tires I may get 6 years out of them. I tend to drive my sports cars a lot in the summer, not just Sunday drives.

When I bought mine they were similar in age. Last year the Goodyear runflats actually broke loose on a second to third shift around 85-90 and went sideways real fast. I had the nannies turned off and had a pretty sketchy moment. Just as I was feeling comfortable with the car too... Needless to say, I never turned traction control off again on the track with the Goodyear’s. After replacing with the r888r’s the car is much easier to predict and control. Throttle control is still a concern in the twisties (as I assume any tire will be, but as mentioned previously you shouldn’t stab the gas pedal), but straight line traction is no longer an issue.

Age of tires is a controversial subject for some. Tire manufactures will tell you 6 years and the tires are done, I have read literature that counters that they can be good to 10 years from date of manufacture. The Texas Mile will not let you run with a tire that is 7 years old from date code. Unless your car sits in the garage all the time and you trailer it from show to show, I would er on the safe side and change out any tire over 7 years old. There are a few posts in the C6 Z07 Roll Call Thread starting at 900 that discus tire life.

Bought my 08 Z06 in November from a dealer, 10K miles, orginial tires. Didn't drive hard on the test drive because the salesman was with me . The car I purchased is almost undrivable with the orginal tires unless you just cruise along. I had driven several with newer tires and it's a huge difference. I live in the mid west and not doing much winter driving, the tires are being replaced before spring.
My experience is 10 year old tires even with little wear have no grip.

I had 11 year old OEM Goodyear Runcraps on my Z and they were hard and the traction was poor. Only had around 2,700 miles on them and they had lots of tread, but harden over time. Went with MSPS4s and they are much stickier and not having the traction issues I had. I have a bolt-on Z making 526rwhp. The other option would be the MPS2 ZP run-flats. Maybe someone has done a comparison between these two tires. I know they are about 16lbs heavier for 4 tires and cost more, but not sure about ride, handling, traction and noise compared to the MPS4s. Run-flats are typically noisier. The old Goodyear's were really loud. I noticed a difference in ride quality and noise with the MPS4s. Just hope I don't get a flat.

I love my Nitto NT01's. I noticed the increased grip from my one year old MPSS's immediately. I have maybe a bit over half the tread left after 4,000 miles. They come with 6.3/32 depth when new.

Guys, I choose the NT01’s by Nitto. UNBELIEVABLE grip. It is like a different car, transformed! I can drive it super aggressive WITHOUT any traction control and it is totally stable. Only problem is that this makes me want heads and a CAM.

Nice! The Michelin's were a huge upgrade over the Goodyear Gen 2's and these improve traction even further at the cost of longevity and some who report increased road noise. Make sure you get an alignment to get the most out of them. I bought a lifetime alignment from Firestone last year for $170.

Regarding the age of tires. If you live in a hot climate, the OP looks like Arizona, then your tires have baked and are probably hard and with no grip. I live in West Texas and have to get new tires more frequently for this reason. Also the asphalt roads contribute to the oil on the streets and with baked hard tires it is very hard to get a grip.
