Custom Splitter
When I first bought my car I knew it had a custom. Splitter I thought the original owner told me it was made of some type of composite but after some scrapes from the drive way I found it to be plywood. Still it was designed very well. Blkbrd69 shared with me pics of the build. Don't know if anyone had seen these. It's made from marine plywood and epoxy paint.
Looks good. Plywood is a common material used for splitters. Not because it is light (it isn't), but because it is easy to work with, relatively durable and cheap to replace. Many guys at the track use plywood for this reason. You don't need a template. You already have one on your car. Just remove your fascia (good time to install the ZR1 splitter brace as well) and trace it on a sheet of plywood to get the correct angles, then cut the trace and cut it long on the other side. You then simply brace it under the car on a lift and trace the back cuts to where you want it to extend back to and cut your back section off. It isn't rocket science. If you are on coilovers you can attach it to the holes that the leafs were attached to, and also screw it in from the bottom to the ZR1 splitter. Some guys also install brackets, but mounting to the radiator support (this is not part of the frame) is not advisable. For it to be more functional, it needs to extend further out than is depicted here. At least 3-4 inches more.
ABS is also a simple, easy solution. I built an ABS splitter for $100 in my dining room with a jig saw and I've posted my steps with pictures on these forums. And I'm a stock broker by trade, not a mechanic, carpenter or plastic expert. It can be done in about an hour with a sheet of plywood or ABS. No template is needed, as the template is your damn fascia.
You can also coat the plywood with a heavy weave fiberglass, add some black pigment to the resin and it will be water proof, stronger and you can use a thinner plywood sheet and offset some of the fiberglass weight. Created a splitter with a 1/8" foam core and 8 layers of carbon fiber.and used the same approach.I wanted to be able to just make another because I know they will be consumable. Like the wood attachment points!
I would still assume ABS would be a better choice. Think about damage control if you ever destroy the splitter as well. ABS won't splinter and rip hoses, fittings, bumpers, etc. Plywood will.
And I remember you saying your wife was soooo pleased with you for doing this in the dining room.
Haha, yeah she was thrilled. Especially when I busted out the harbor freight jig saw and millions of tiny shards of black ABS went flying everywhere and into the white carpet, executed flawlessly I might add on her $4000 dining room table. Proud of that as a $100 splitter would have rapidly grown into a multi-thousand dollar project. One of those cords in those pics is to the spare vacuum cleaner she made me use to clean it all (most) up. Only cost me a week on the couch, which was cool as I could watch ****. Results on track were outstanding. Car was then properly balanced in front. Keep in mind I have a very small and difficult to see rear spoiler which adds a bit of rear downforce.
