[ZR1] Headers and tune for 2010 Zr1

Melting Slicks
I like these header-only threads. A lot of guys say that headers are pointless until you get to 700+whp but yet I've seen several threads where significant gains are made.

Gut the cats and the tune the car and it makes the same power. The 20-30hp gain is the tune, especially with a guy as good as Matt at GP.

Headers (vs. gutting the cats) are a sound-only mod until at least north of 700WHP. My car made 574/536 with just gutted cats and a tune with less than ideal IAT2's from back to back pulls.

May car started at 510 RWHP (Mustang Dyno), was tuned yielding 570 RWHP, Then I added headers and retuned to get to 580 RWHP. So I agree that headers don't do much on early power mods. This post was for Headers and Tune, my bet is most of the gains came from the tune.

You only gained 10 hp from headers? That's hard to believe!

If an item (intake, heads, exhaust) are not restrictions then there will be little if any gain by replacing them. There are many performance cars out now where there is no gain in replacing the intake, it is a sound only mod. Headers up to a point are the same for us. The heads on our cars are similar, very little if any gain by just swapping or porting the heads on a stock car. I've owned cars where swapping the heads got me 100 rwhp (my last GN). On our cars even the high HP guys are only seeing 40-50hp gains by doing some serious porting or swapping to an aftermarket head. Greg at Kong performance has showed over and over that dollar per HP, money is best spent pre-heads on the ZR1. (and of course the best bang for your buck mod...E85)
