Default BTR 2 vs BTR 3 vs custom

I'm having a NW 102 tb installed and tuned at DRM in two months and I'm still bouncing around the idea of having a bigger cam put in than the current BTR 2 while I'm at it. Don't get me wrong, overall I'm very happy with the 2 but I feel like it drops off a bit somewhere after 6k. I feel like something a bit bigger would benefit me during the occasional roll race or when I'm ringing it out in the country. I currently have full bolt-ons including a ported MSD and ported oem heads. If I'm convinced to do it, the two cams I would choose from are the BTR 3 and a custom TSP cam spec'd by a well known tuner on the forum. The TSP cam falls in between their 2.2 and 3.2 grinds.

BTR 3: 237/250 .646/.632 113+3
Other: 236/248 .651/.651 112+3

I'm curious what you guys think. I'm okay with a bit worse driveability. The car is driven 75% of the time from May-October and unfortunately in hibernation the other six months.

I think you are splitting a RCH
Doubt there is much of any difference street, strip, or dyno between those cams on your set up.

I know they are real close in specs. I'm mainly just trying to get others' opinions on going bigger vs sticking with what I've got. I have 2" AR headers.

Not enough difference to feel, no need for a custom cam. Stock gearing?

Yep, stock gearing. These cams are about as big as I'd be willing to go-overlap around 18.

Go with the one who's lobes are kinder on your valvetrain.

I'm sure BTR does a ton of research on valve train and Im guessing TSP lobes are top notch as well. The following statement came with the custom spec'd cam: "This cam profile features TSP362 endurance-oriented lobes ground under license by Texas Speed on both intake and exhaust utilizing their million-dollar Landis CNC cam grinder. These .362” lift lobes are designed for excellent valvetrain stability in an endurance application. You can expect long spring life and quiet operation with the recommended dual valve springs."

Prob wont notice a difference - do you redline regularly or stay under 5k most of the time?

I’m under 5k most of the time but run it close to redline almost every time I’m out. It’s an LS7 for goodness sakes!

Reason I asked is because you will really only see gains over 5k and will be less power under 5k.

I’m in the same boat. I have an 09 Z with all the bolt ons. Getting 3.90s installed on the 25th. Have a BTR stage 2 now and it’s just not enough for me. Falls off around 6k, but drives like stock. Considering a BTR Stage 3 to step it up. Eventually it’ll have 13.8 compression heads and be on E85, so the new cam will be installed at that time. +1 for the BTR stage 3.

I don't think I'd like less power under 5k. I knew that was a trade-off. Same thing when going from BTR 3 to a 4. Ideally, I'd like more power everywhere aka new heads/cam/E85 like Sicvette just mentioned. When I mentioned E85 to the shop I go to they didn't seem to be a big fan of it for various reasons. Sicvette, keep us posted on the gear swap with the BTR 2.

No, being sarcastic. That cam has a crazy amount of overlap even with a wide LSA. He's just putting in a 102 tb in May and re-tuning. I've went back and forth about putting a bigger cam in but just can't get myself to do it. I might just try to relax and maybe do a different head cam combo in the future. Maybe E85-it's everywhere in ND. It'll be interesting to see the before/after dyno even though my oem tb is already ported by Tony Mamo.
