[Z06] I don't think it will be called "Z06"

Why wasn't Z06 ZR1? Because the gap from C4 to ZR1 was huge, and the gap between Z06 and C5 was much more modest. Even though Z06's performance is in the same league as ZR1, it's a smaller leap from its stablemate and thus naming it ZR1 would have seemed like trading on the name.
Since the old Z06 is so removed from today, and almost nobody remembers it, it was a safe candidate for reuse. And since it was a modest RPO similar in concept to the 2001 car -- a Corvette for track duty -- it was a good fit.

I think naming the C-6 super car Z06 would have been like the use of ZR-1 on the C-5
I think it would be wrong to use it again they need to pull something else from the archives!
I think the mention of ZL1 would be perfect!

If you read the most recent issue of R & T, that what the designer of the car has taken to calling it. If it is good enough for him, it is good enough for me. :cheers:

If the 100hp difference & more comes to be the truth they better not reuse Z06. And it should be ZR1 unless it is 540-600hp* or more.
540hp = 1.35x400
600hp = 1.50x400
1993 ZR1 = 405hp = 1.35x300hp (LT1)
1990 ZR1 = 375hp = 1.50x250hp (L98)
540hp = 1.35x400
600hp = 1.50x400
1993 ZR1 = 405hp = 1.35x300hp (LT1)
1990 ZR1 = 375hp = 1.50x250hp (L98)

Z06 has massive brand-name recognition these days, and it's all good. Look for GM to leverage that investment rather than toss it and start over.

I was just reading in Automobile magazine where they took a C5 through Japan and were stopped by a group of children who kept staring at the car and repeating the same question - "Z06?!" Now that's power.
The reason the high performance version of the C5 was called Z06 and not ZR1 is that the ZR1 was not a commercial success. The car was widely derided for being way too overpriced for both a Corvette of the time and one with a body largely undifferentiated from run-of-the-mill C4s.
The C5 was an enormous leap forward over the C4 and the Z06 that followed was clearly different from regular C5s. The result was that a car planned for 10% of C5 sales ended up taking nearly 25%. Had they offered the package in the Coupes/Convertibles this number would have doubled. In its short four (!) model years the Z06 name has now garnered a level of worldwide recognition and respect equivalent to such storied European performance brands as Mercedes' AMG and BMW's M.
GM must nurture and build on this with an even more devastating version of the C6 Z06. Let's go GM!

I think GM will leverage the Z06 name on the new C6 platforms. The ZR1 was not all GM (Lotus/marine) as a result, I think that's why it was'nt leveraged on the C5's.

Z06 may have name recognition, but that could be a doubl-edged sword. Using the Z06 RPO over again might get some saying "Eh.... same ole stuff." even when the new performance model comes out. Giving it a new marque may breathe new life into the program and get all eyes on it again.

Some guy in OT talked to Dave Hill recently at a show, and Hill said it would for sure be called "Z06" when it debuts in Jan of '05.

I bet they show it in a different color than the coupes we've seen (or the convertible we'll see soon) -- I bet yellow. Or maybe a new color not available for MY2005.

I think "FIVE HUNDRED HORSEPOWER!" will get all eyes on it again.

Or no eyes and everyone will just say "Eh... less than viper." Obviously that crowd isn't us, but you know how the rest of the public works.
