It kind of makes sense to me. GM by now has a good handle on the wait list for C6 orders. My guess is that the sales response is underwhelming and that there are a lot of us waiting for the Z06 version. I would not be surprised to see them come out with a lower spec version of the Z06, say 475 hp, at a price of $55K to get us out of our C5's and into a C6.

That doesn't make sense to me, but then again neither does any of GM's marketing plan for the C6.

I don't understand the "same hp as a current Z06" for the C6 base BUT WAIT A YEAR for the C6 Z06.

That's a major buzzkill.

As a (405hp) Z06 owner why would I want to purchase a C6 that is 5hp less (or even within 20 hp either way) than my current car, knowing full well that in a year there is going to be a much higher performance version available?

The only way that makes sense is if I have money to burn on depreciation, and if I have that kind of money to burn, I'd possibly be looking at more exotic rides than the Z06.

450hp will be underwhelming. Don't get me wrong, I'd probably trade for one, but in 2007 instead of 2006. I'd wait for real deals to be made on the car just to pick up 45hp.

500hp is worth paying close to sticker for - that is a significantly faster car.

I like it because the Z06 is supposed to be special. Regular Corvette coupes/verts SHOULD NOT be faster than a Z06, even in a new generation. :) I'm glad they did that. The new Z06 should be the only thing to trump a current Z06.

I think Tom has a good grasp on the situtation. Current Z06 owners aren't gong to buy base level C6's. They like many Coupe and Vert C5 owners are going to wait until the specs of the C6/Z06 are announced. At 450 HP, I'll stay with the vert. At 500 HP then I have to do some serious soul searching. Non the less, I get this great sinking feeling deep in my gut that 450 is all its going to be.

I really hope 450 horses isnt all GM is going to put out because that would just be a real disappointment. :banghead:

I think that only 450 hp would be a major blunder on the part of GM.
Other American manufacturers either have or are developing 500hp
engines (Viper, Ford GT). The 450 HP approach would leave Corvette way behind the curve.

One can argue that the Corvette does not compete in the same price-performance-point as the Viper or Ford GT, however, that's a detail that
the marketeers will argue -- not the guys at the track.

Corvette has always had a reputation for providing near supercar performance at an affordable price. They will lose this image as well as
their niche in the market if they do not hold true to their heritage.

Exactly. Screw the price point comparison. This is the "performance variant" Corvette. If it's gotta be another 5-10k, so be it. Job one needs to be to make this car BEAT cars that ARE more expensive that itself....namely Viper. They need to keep the image up due to performance, not due to price.

Agree 100%......

The Vette is the perfect example that because of the price you don't have to sacrifice handling and performance.......

In those areas the Vette doesn't back down from anybody.....

Here is the list of sports cars with 450hp or more:

Ford GT 550hp
Lamborghini Gallardo 500hp
Porsche GT2 477hp
06 Porsche 997 Turbo 450hp
Dodge Viper 500hp

You can bet that the next Modena will have 500hp also.....

More and more we are seeing the first number in cars begining with 5 so i hope GM listens and does the same with the Z......

Ah.....

Ford GT 550hp - $125,000 Base … 3,200lbs.
Lamborghini Gallardo 500hp - $165,900 … 3,153lbs.
Porsche GT2 477hp - $181,700 … 3,175lbs.

The C6 475hp. $50,000 Z06 would more than likely take the Dodge Viper 500hp - $79,950 … 3,357lbs. on weight.

That weight that you posted from the Gallardo is the dry weight (without fuel) the actual Curb weight is 3,350 lbs.

In case of the Ford GT all magazines have reported Curb weights in the 3,400 lbs region.........

So the Z06 will be significantly lighter than either one...... :chevy

ivan,

Yep yerright! I think people are so spoiled by the C4 & C5 progress that they don't realize the value of the sports car package the C6 (based on the number so far) brings to the table.
