Default Shipping used supercharger

I purchased a supercharger from a fellow Corvette Forum member. When he went up to ship it at UPS last night, they wanted to charge over $500. This is weird because I've shipped full sets of wheels/tires in the past for less money than that.

So I'm curious for those of you who have shipped parts like this in the past, how did you do it? One box? Multiple boxes? Insured for the full amount? (that's part of what is killing the shipping cost it seems)

Any insight would be great.

If it's a complete kit, shipping from one coast to the other it will be expensive. $500 is maybe probably undoubtedly excessive. If he is shipping in one box the size and weight would have to be shipped by freight company and if that's the case 500 would not be excessive.

I just shipped an F2 with brackets and damper from Houston to Georgia for $105. I build a wooden box to fit in a Lowes moving box. Bolted the blower bracket and damper to the box and then put it all in the moving box. Didn't bother with insurance. It wasnt going to be damaged. Now if it were lost that would be another story but I felt the risk was minimal. Parts arrived with the buyer just as they were mailed. I guess the wood for the box cost me $20 or $30 so you can add that into the cost.

I shipped mine to Procharger for $150 via UPS, and that included $500 insurance (which racked on another $50 or so).
Put it in a box stuffed with an excessive amount of packing.

I shipped an entire procharger set up for a c5 corvette to the west coast from Indiana for 125. One box, UPS and no insurance.

Insurance is always going to kill you on stuff like that, unfortunately. I shipped a Procharger setup for under 200 bucks all-in-all. I had to use 2 boxes since I was utilizing what I had laying around. May have been cheaper with a single box. I found FedEx was cheaper than the competitors for my situation. This was a full procharger setup for a C6. 500 is way too much

Someone shipped one to me in a couple of plastic storage container. He put locks on the boxes and game me the number to get inside. It was an easy transaction.

He ended up being able to ship through his company and saved a ton of money.

I do appreciate the creative methods though.
