Taking a 3 month break from powdercoating
Hi everyone,
I will be closed for business until July 5th, 2010.
5 years of being a full time airline pilot and full time powdercoater are starting to take their toll on me. I am coming home from trips and am greeted by a backlog of parts to coat and frankly, I am getting burned out.
I have decided the best course of action for me right now is to take a 3 month break to get my enthusiasm back. It might be shorter, but probably not.
If you have already been in contact with me about work, or are on any of my waiting lists for exchange, I will still be doing your stuff.
If you have sent in parts or talked to me about sending them in, I will still be doing those.
If you are one of the Corvette shops that I work with, I will still be available to support you during this time
If you are a current customer who has any problem whatsoever and needs a replacement part or any other service, I will still be here for you
I just need to cut the workload by about 90% for a bit before quality starts to suffer. I'd rather do no work at all than shoddy work, and it wouldn't be fair to the customer in the end.
Thanks for your understanding.

I've work a full time job and have had a part time business for over 20 years, do what ya gotta do! You will always be able to jump back in when YOU ARE ready! Good luck, although it sounds like you are going to still do everybodys powdercoating but mine (lol)!

Well deserved hiatus
Just wanted to say that I had a business for 37 years and everytime I went somewhere, someone wanted me to do work for them. I was at once grateful and somewhat frustrated because it took most of my waking hours, which left me without a "LIFE". I know where you're coming from. I just wanted to say that I am grateful to you because I just got mine in under the wire Hope I wasn't the straw that broke the camel's back Enjoy your well deserved hiatus.

You deserve a break. Your work is fist class. You may just need to take more naps during your flights. Sorry, I just had to say it. Being a cop I get the doughnuts jokes all the time to. Plus I'm a part-time pilot and hear the nap jokes also.
Enjoy your time off and be safe!!!

Mike, that is a wise thing. Having a "side business" has to be something you LOVE doing. If the enjoyment is gone (temporarily), taking a break is the best thing for both you and your customers. I hope we'll still be hearing from you on the Forum.

Enjoy your vacation Mike. You need to take time to enjoy life, too much work and one starts to to get in a boring spiral downward. You did a great job on my brake calipers and I truly appreciate the professional manner in which you do your work.

All these farewell's are starting to sound like an obituary. He's just taking a break. Geez Louise!
Mike's the best and because he is, he's getting overwhelmed (I guess). At least he's not doing what a friend of mine (who is an electrician) does when he get's too busy.
He raises his rates and say's that this increase makes up for the lost business from it and he gets his break and breaks even.
Enjoy your time off.

Mike, thanks for the great work you have done for me in the past. Being someone who has a good paying, full time job, I have always wondered why you do this. I am glad you do, but I could never give up my prescious free time for a few extra bucks. I know the amount of work that goes into every set of calipers, and I can't believe it's worth it for you. I really hope (for my sake) that you decide to continue after the three months, but I also think you should think hard about what is important to you.
Best of luck my friend

Bummer. I was considering enlisting your services in the next few weeks. But good for you.
Guess it's a sign that I need to do it myself. Already have the extra oven and everything but the gun and powder.
Any tips on masking the raised letters? Or do you just rub the tops off after coating? Before the bake I assume.
Thanks. And enjoy your vacation fercryinoutloud! Doing the coating AND an airline pilot?
One can't serve two masters. Of course, that was my conductor talking about instruments, but I think it's appropo here.
