If it is needed which one is the right one for the MDI programming?

Thanks for all clarification in advance.

You need the online account. The MDI is useless without it. That's where it pulls all the calibrations/software for each module in the car.

I've never used the MDI personally, so I may be wrong, but I don't believe the MDI can even be used as a diagnostics tool. I'm pretty sure you need to subscribe to the Tech2Win which makes your PC/laptop act like a tech 2 and passes thru the MDI as the interface to the car.

If you want to program modules, all you need is the Service Programming Only subscription or GM Light Duty Global Diagnostics 2- GDS 2 depending on the year/make/model you're programming. This chart tells you what is supported: https://service.gm.com/userguides/GD...d_Vehicles.pdf

Thanks - seems that runs expenisve - 1000 bucks a year plus the hardware for a few programming tweaks is hard.

Open for other ideas via PM.

Cheers

If you only need it once in awhile, just do the $55 for two days. That's what I normally do. Still cheaper and less hassle than going to the dealer.

There should be an option for a 3 day pass or something like that which is more reasonable for the DIY guys

Anybody around Greensboro? Replaced clock spring in the truck and light is still on. Not sure if something needs to be cleared or if that just wasn't the issue. Really need a tech 2 or whatever factory tool to see what is going on

Are you referring to the steering wheel positioning sensor? Your logic is correct. I would try pulling the negative battery cable for 10 minutes to see if it clears. Not sure if that code is locked in the ECU and requires a tech 2 to clear it or not. I know the C7's have codes that won't clear with a batter disconnect.

No, clock spring.. I messed the old one up when I was replacing the steering wheel a few months back, or, at least I thought I did. Airbag light came on around the time I changed the wheel and I cracked part of one of the connectors on the clock spring so that made sense

I'll try pulling the battery cable for a bit and see if that clears it out

Can the Tech 2 program 2008 and up? I see written limitations of 2007 and was wondering if that is true?

Tech ll can program a 2008

Now remember just to be clear , a TECH 2 is not a programmer like HP Tuners or a Diablo , it is a diagnostic tool that allows you to measure many things and access the ECM, TCM and BCM to change parameters like removing the VIN from a radio , turning off options like the magnitic shocks etc

Hi Dave, yes I understand the limitations of the tech 2. It is just that I have read a few times in the description the TIS2000 can program up to and including 2007. I understand it is to remove the VIN from the radio. Just wanted to make sure it can do this on newer than 2007.

So if that is the case all should be good if I get one since I have a 2008.

yep you will be good , you will not use the TIS2000 software much as most of what you will do is contained right in the tool

feel free to PM or Email me if you need help, I can send you screen shots of the menu you need to be in

Dave

Interesting... had not seen those. I had read about some kind of virtual tech 2 interface but didn't know any of the details. I might do that if I can find a laptop I can use. I have an old Lenovo tablet that might work, the reviews say it has to be a 32 bit OS so I'd probably have to install one first, but still

Other option is a Chinese knock off tech 2, I think they're around $200 but I haven't looked in a while?

I'm going to read more about the one you posted though, thanks, that would be useful on both of my GM vehicles and might be the way I go

Considering just getting one of these so I can just plug it in and use it, not have to deal with installing everything to make the VXDIAG interface work

Something like this:
Amazon Amazon

Good idea, bad idea?

Looking like $275 or so for a tech 2 with shipping and can module, that would be the easiest option

I’ll see if my old laptop still works. If so I might get the interface on amazon and try that

My tech 2 was bought from http://www.obd2eshop.com/wholesale/t...is2000.html,it will cover all the Chevrolet Corvette C6 cars and older since the last of the updated firmware on the unit covers from here back. If you do need to reflash something, it’s done via Tis2000 with the Tech II as the pass through device.
