Default shop or DIY tune to wake up the car?

I have a stock (except Cold air, and NPP retrofit) 06 C6 with LS2. I do some basic mechanic works on the car (brakes, shocks, belts, plugs, etc). I want to tune the car, just to wake up some of the hidden performance in the car. In the summer, the car is kind of a retired guys daily driver. Not planning on experimenting with tunes. I have to do this on the cheap. Home, family, etc take point on finances.

Between the DIY time using a hand lend device vs a shop time, which makes since economically? Is one better than the other? Can I damage the car with a DIY tune?

I bought a used Diablo hand held tuner and uploaded the 93 octane tune. Definitely noticeable bump in power. Cost me $150.

OK... Cool!
How much do you need to know about engine tuning in order to use the Diablo to tune your car? I am pretty computer technical, but I am not savvy when it comes to car tuning. I've been considering buying a tuner, but I first need to know what I need to know before taking the jump.

About the tuner device:
Is there a specific model that works best with the C6 Vette?
If I am on Ebay looking for a device, what should I look for?
Do the devices hold a copy of the stock tune?

About the tune(s):
Where do you buy tunes?
Are there tunes that are better than others?
What does a tune cost?

I had a Diablotuner. I did a few mods + the DT and ended up running lean and pinging constantly. Ran good without the mods tho - so your mileage may vary depending on if you want to mod it further. I sold the DT and got a HPT instead. car is very happy now (a little rich up top, but I need to get a wideband before I finish the final tune - its running very conservative now).
