Default Same Boat..

Tom

I am in the same boat, but unfortunately, I have an 05-so here's what I am on the list for next month at L.G.

RPM trans/rear swap
4.10 gears
super strength shafts
DTE brace
Strange 12 point adj. shocks.

I hate to have to spend that kind of money, but I know that it will be right after I get the car back.

Congrats!

Why race with coolant temps above the timing cutoff? Just turn on your heater full blast for a few sec.

That's weird, it's working for me. When you click on it, it should open a "do you want to open in" box. Then you click the program (word) and it should open a spread sheet pasted onto a word doc.

It's funny reading this thread as I went to the track last week. I had the same problem with wheel hop and 2.1-2.3 60' times. My psi was at 23.5 in the rears. My best time that night was 12.57 and my highest mph was 116.2. I had a 98 Ws6 and had 1.7 60' times with no wheel hop. I was very surprised about the wheel hop the first time I ran it that night. Overall I am very impressed with the performance of the car and look forward to many more nights of racing.

I forgot to mention, I set my tires to 24 PSI in the rear for all runs.

I don't have ANY idea why I had SO much wheel hop on my first burn out, and none on the rest...w/all the same settings and procedures.

To lower your 60', do a looooong burn out. People say not to w/street tires, but it worked for me.

Anyone know of a site where I can put up my spread sheet?

Sorry if this question bothered you, just curious and just trying to help. I saw you were going for a certain Et, so I was confused why you would run with less timing knowingly.

No it didn't bother me...I just don't think that running the heater will do much...or anything. RMR only lets you T&T until sunset, so I had limited time to make my passes. And to allow for cool down. Basically, I got no "meaningful" cool down time, and as I posted before, by my third pass, even w/hood open engine off through the staging lanes, my temps were over 200* by the third pass. I've read on here that anything over 186 pulls timing.

Even though the DA was going down after about 7:00 PM, my ET's and traps were pretty consistent (you'd see it if I could figure out how to post a .doc file). But my passes were:

..TIME.....60'.....ET.......TRAP
6:05 PM 1.99 12.911 @ 110.45
7:01 PM 2.07 12.89 @ 110.6
7:40 PM 2.06 12.93 @ 110.56
7:54 PM 2.09 12.92 @ 111.48
8:12 PM 2.03 12.92 @ 110.34

By comparison (and this is in the sheet I can't post, my previous RECORDED best run, which happened last year in 7600' DA condition, 90*+ temp:

..TIME.....60'.....ET.......TRAP
5:57 PM 2.22 13.05 @ 110.29

If you could see the rest of the data from the sheet it would show that my run from the 60' to the 1320' last year was .016 slower than my fastest run two nights ago, and the previous trap was .3 slower. How could that be with:
1600'+ LOWER DA this time
60* and lower ambient temps this time vs. 90*+ before
Shifting at 6500 this time vs. 6000 before.

Also how was my wheel hoppin' debacle of a run (first run) the fastest 60'?? As well as a great run???? Makes zero sense to me. So far, I've learned nothing from these runs, and only become more confused.b

I think I would be willing to pay that $2?? FU fee and do a track rental. It's complete robbery but it seems like just about every time you go there your getting robbed. It's looks pretty obvious you won't figure it all out until you get a day with more than 2 or 3 runs. With all of that conflicting expierence your getting I'd say that is the only way to achive piece of mind on the subject. I went to the track last Friday with plans to run my 08z for the first time and it was way too crowded. I would have only made 1 or 2 runs and probably left pissed off like you did. If its like that next time I'll be looking for some people to do a day with. Good luck with your ongoing quest.

Tom asked that I host his spreadsheet at my website:

Arraying the data for each pass in this manner sure helps drivers identify areas for improvement.

Fine, consistent passes Tom.

Thanks a bunch to Ranger for hosting and posting that sheet.

The first run is the one where I had wheel hop for the burn out, and probably 1/3 of the entire pass. Yet, the times were still in line w/all the others which didn't have that issue (relatively speaking). In the interest of keeping info consolidated here is some text from my post (#60) right after I went last Wednesday...
A few observations and questions.
Coolant temps at the start of my runs last night were:
174
185
205
215
216
You'll note that on the right, there is column w/results from last year when I was getting LOW 13's, and bad 60' times. Look at the DA. Also that is in 90*+ temps. Last night, you'll see the DA was ~6000' and temps were in the 60's. -About as good as you ever see in UT.

BUT I didn't run 1 mph faster...IN SPITE of moving my shift points from 6k to 6500 RPM. Doesn't make sense to me.

Also my first pass was an absolute disaster, in real life, though it looks good on paper. I went around the water box, backed into it (w/o getting yelled at), pull out of the box about 4', and proceeded w/my burn out. Immediately got TONS of wheel hop and aborted. Tried again, more hop. Tried a (now) dry hop and got more wheel hop. Pulled up to the line, very disappointed, and staged knowing that I'd have to launch soft, since I didn't get a real warm up. Lunched soft, and after about 40' or so, tire broke loose and....started hopping. I stayed in it b/c I was so pissed and it hopped all the way through 1st! Shifted to 2nd and it hopped 3/4 of the way through 2nd. Hit 3rd (not power shifting BTW), and it' hopped for probably 8 "hops". Hit 4th, and 3 more hops. I KNEW that had to be a 13.5 run...or worse, but you see the time slip was a 12.91, and what's even more focked up is that was on a 1.99 60'...my BEST EVER!???

The rest of my burn outs were smoooooooooooth, fun, effortless and resulted in good traction -even though I used the EXACT same technique! I don't get that either.

So, why w/higher RPM shifts (supposedly better), cooler air did I gain no mph?

Why was my wheel hoppin', crap warm-up run as good or in some aspects better than the others??

I need to get a video cam or at least a voice recorder in the car!

-Tom

I've got two problems;
1. I can NOT get this car to 60' in less than 2.1x. Most of the time, it's 2.2x, and sometimes as bad at 2.3x Just terrible. I used to nail 1.8x's in my Trans Am all the time, on BFG R1 KDW's. I know that the run flats are harder to work with, but I swear, it feels like they're on grease compared to what I'm used to. There's just NO traction at all. I'm running 24-26 PSI, and tonight I was launching from 1000 to 1100 RPM. Roll off the clutch nice and smooth over about 1 full second, and be to 3/4 throttle by the time the clutch is out. WOT at any time in first gear resulted in wheel spin.

2. Wheel hop during burn outs. I can't believe that I didn't pop my diff tonight. The harder I tried to do a burn out, the more wheel hop I got. ANd I got a LOT!. SO much, something was "thumping" under the car; sounded sort of like the trans was hitting the floor pan. WICKED ANNOYING! The F-bods NEVER did this. Ever. No way could I even think about doing a proper brake stand and really cranking on the tires. Car just won't do it.

I don't know what to do (with my driving). I can't do a good burn out b/c of wheel hop, and I can't lay down a decent 60' to save myself. Grrr. My first pass tonight in 100* heat and a DA of 7600' was a lousy 13.3 and that was on a 2.3 sixty...so once again, 12.9x's were possible....if I could get any traction.

I got the exact same problemo. My best time at 3500 feet above sea level was 13.4. Severe wheel hop at the start and hitting 2nd, backed off the throttle both times. It was a cool day 60 degrees and the tires never warmed up. I'm gonna try it this summer when the weather is 80+. Listen to Ranger he knows his Sheite.

Well, everyone has to pay to get in at our local NHRA track, fairly big time place. Whether the GF/SO/etc is in the car with you or not. This includes for "Club Challengs" when all sorts of car clubs (not just make-spedific, but things like "Fast Girls") get together about every third Friday night.

So, good luck on getting them to make the entrance for anyone free, whether crew or otherwise.

That part of the thread that you're referning to is OLD news....from last summer. The thread was significantly updated at post #60.

Anyway, my "beef" wasn't that my GF didn't get in for free. I'll pay for her, any time she's willing to come! My "beef" was, and I'll quote myself here....

But again, that whole topic is ancient history, and not really on topic to the recent (last page) posts. See post #74 and #75 to get back on track please. No pun intended, BTW

OK, whatever. But now I'm waiting for someone to respond to my new thread on "Convert 08 A6 to F1 style paddles" in this forum.

I went out to the track for the second time in my 05 Z51 and still had bad wheel hop. The first time was this Feb in 50 degree temps with the stock run flats. I now have new KDW2s at 26 psi and Bilstein Sports.

I took it easy leaving the line and ended up with 2.3 60's, but with no wheel hop. The wheel hop came on real bad on the 1-2, 2-3, and 3-4 shifts. Best I could manage was a 13.7 at 107. Conditions were 85 degrees and a 1300' elevation.

The only thing that I can think of is that I have my car lowered about as far as it can go on the stock bolts (previous owner did it) and that is affecting the wheel hop.

Has anyone experimented with different ride height settings and rake as a method to eliminate wheel hop?
