I'm "Apache" a psycho dog
For the guys that have done this mod; have you driven you car in rain with the shroud propped open? Have you checked for water incursion at the filter or past it?
My guess is that chance for hydro lock is non existant unless you are in 2 feet of water, but there is a chance (good chance) of getting the filter wet in a hard rain. What about past the filter?

I just installed a Vette-Air that I received from a friend, and then did some testing. There was a big difference in the IAT at highway speeds. With an AAT of 80 degrees, the IAT was about 84 Degrees. I then built a quasi bee hive out of foam core, insulated it with styrofoam and covered it with reflective aluminum tape. The results were a bit better, but, the temps dropped much faster when the engine compartment was cut from the air intake.
However, in a drag racing situation, were your idling for awhile and the IAT gets up to the 150+ area (here in southern California), the car is breathing a lot of hot air that critical first 60'. In the quarter mile with AAT at 70 degrees, I staged at 145 degrees, at the end of the 1/4 it was 102. The computer is backing a lot of timing at those temperatures. With the prototype box, 80 degree AAT, 140 IAT - at 60' the temp drops to 120 and at the end of the 1/4, IAT is 90 degrees.
Total cost for me was about $12.00

Better you start a new thread of "Build yourself a Bee Hive for Twelve""

Just went through a helluva South Florida rain storm with the shroud open and everything was fine. I do have a Blackwing Air induction system and ,as it has already been stated, maybe the oil on the filter helped.
I love this mod. because it was easy to do, inexpensive and made sense to me as to why it would work. The car seems to idle smoother in the 90+ degree summer, too.

Has anyone tried the cold air mod on a GS 6spd manual? I'm anxious to crawl under the car tonight and check things out. Sounds like an easy way to drop IAT considerably.

Check my post (#57). If you have the stock air filter and drive it in rain, I wouldn't do it. Aftermarket air filter that isn't a paper element will probably be fine.

I just had a kinda hair brained idea, What if you took one of those cold packs for your back/neck and velcroed it to the inside of the air inlet on any cold air system to cool the air....Anyone think it would work. You can freeze them, and i would think that air going across it would definately cool the IAT down... I figure it might help in the summer.
