K&N and Free Air Mod Using Toggle Bolts
After reading about Whiterock1's free air mod, I decided to do the same. I wasn't able to get the plumbing supplies he used, but found something that worked really well.
I bought two packs of these toggle bolts at Home Depot for a $1.47 each. I use two of the butterflies on one bolt.
I use this tool to remove the plastic fasteners holding the shroud.
You can adjust the opening size that you want for your cool air by turning the butterflies to the desired length. Put the bolt head side into the shroud and the other end into the holes that the shroud was fastened to. The butterflies keep it securely in place. It can be popped out in about 30 seconds if rain or any other condition is an issue.

I couldn't view them either so I copy/pasted the pics after looking at the post via the 'quote' function, looks pretty good.
I was just looking at mine today and it seems that the shroud has somehow molded itself into the open position, I no longer even need to prop it open anymore (but I still do) LOL.
Thing is I did mine using only one prop in the middle so it's really bowed in that area.

Great idea!! Might want to consider safety wiring one end so if they happen to pop out on a rough road or something, they don't punch a hole in one of your rear tires. If you need to close the gap for rain or whatever, they can hang down still attached to the safety wire.

Another great idea! amazing what CF members can come up with. Just proves "Necessity is the Mother of Invention"
I've been wondering if there was some sort of folding/locking hinge like you find on table extensions that would lock in the open position, or close in the folded position - may be getting too complicated? And no one would want the added weight of those 2 ounces!

Got to really try out the free air mod today. The car seems to have more pop when I hit the gas than it did before the mod. So far, I am impressed by the mod.

I would not get rid of the Vararam unless you have a warranty issue or something, it is a great perfomance mod.
However, don't bet that it is making much more horsepower than my K&N aircharger with free cold air.
The big advantage is the Vararam is breathing strictly cooler denser air from outside where even with the free cold air you can have a mix of warm engine air.
I would say the Vararam is worth 0.1 and 1mph over the K&N with free cold air from the posts and times I have seen.
