Well, I finally got around to fabbing up "Prototype II" and I slapped it in the car tonight and....guess what?

FAILURE!!...IMO.

Same BLAAAAA-BLAAAAA-BLAAAAA-BLAAAAA-BLAAAAA- crappy sound as before for the most part. It's a LITTLE different....but not at all what I was looking for.

For a recap, and pay attention to the IDLE sounds
Yer basic C6:

Prototype I:

Prototype II:

Benchmark:

Back to the drawing board.

The underlying grrrrraaaahhh tone sounds good, what's that constant blub-blub-blub-blub noise?

Once again- what type of crossover is on your car- an X or H? Vettes come with an X pipe as well as every aftermarket exhaust I have seen for them. The GTO guys trying to get rid of the exotic sound run an H pipe (they too can't let go of old tech apparently). If you are running an X pipe, even with the exact same mufflers as that GTO, it will sound more exotic. Run an H pipe with Flowmaster 40 series and I think you'll get what you are looking for, or at least close.

Vettes come w/an H pipe. Not an X

In the first vid, it is the stock H pipe that comes on all C6's. In both subsequent vids, nothing is changed BUT the H-pipe, to some thing else.

In effort 1, I joined both sides w/a huge chamber. In effort 2, I completely eliminated the crossover or "H", making is two completely separate systems... which is what the GTO's system does.

Maybe it has something to do with the length of the tail pipe. C6 have none. I think Mustangs the muffler is more towards the center of the car, like a 04 GTO.

Late Mustangs have the muffs right at the end of the car w/about 5" of "tail pipe". Very much like the 'Vette. As does the '05 GTO in the "Benchmark" video.

Still, I'll probably try a central muff anyway...

Do they make central mufflers for the c6??? because I've heard that the reason for the later stangs sounding differently is because of the mid-muff. I"m very interested because I've got bullets and x-pipe (and it's pretty loud, but not mustang throaty in your face loud) and I'm debating on going with a catless off-road x-pipe and long tube headers. Which is going to be alot of work and money because I like to do or try to do everything myself.

Only ones I know if are the PRT system which I've yet to hear, nad the Corsa TOURING system, which I've also never heard.

Interesting theory though. The '05 GTO also has a mid-car muff, as well as the ones at the rear. I didn't know that the MUstang also has a mid-car muff. Interesting.

My next attempt (Prototype III) will be to install some type of mid-car muff. Either a Flowmaster or a Dynomax Xflow. Problem will be finding a "2 in/2 out" muff that fits w/in teh confines of the tunnel.

I meant that the older mustangs had the mid-muff. the later ones have muffs like ours, at the end.

08s have Xpipes.

Everything else I agree on. These things don't sound like they should and I have tried everything. My Mustang was like some sweet siren singing me to orgasmic bliss. No matter what this thing just don't get the tones right. Kinda like a real good Kareoki singer. Hitting the notes but she aint no Mariah Carey.

I went with borla stingers....eh, it's the best we've got for a good sound.

And yes, I've heard plenty of cammed C6s at the track....still dont sound as good as I would like.

My dad and I literally thought a dirtbike was blasting by us on the road one day...turned out it was a cammed C6 (puke)

You want deep and throaty from a Vette, put on some (excuse me) Flowmasters and it will give you deep and throaty.

Default Re: flowmasters

I love flow, have one on my dodge truck and it sounds great. Had one on my 94 Formula and IT sounded great. Bought the american thunder off this forum for my 05 and was sorely disappointed. Don't get me wrong, it did change the tone but not for the amount of hassle to install plus the price. They are around the cheapest but I ended up with bullets because some of the guys here were saying that their passengers were complaining of the noise and that's what I wanted. But I'm still not happy. Especially when a 95 mustang revs beside me. but I'm working on getting headers. Just sucks that we have a 400 or 505 hp car and is sounds like *** stock....imho

It's the LSx firing order. The LSx engines will always sound like old trucks with burned out mufflers. That's why GM builds them with quiet exhaust systems.

I dunno if I agree 100%. I've heard a few GTOs that sound almost right.

Just a FYI about center muffs - my 05 (no headers, stock cats) has the Bassani (single muff in tunnel, just in front of diff) - still has the "blub, blub, blub"... idle sound (the kit was $500 less than Borla Stingers...)
I wish it sounded as nice as that GTO youtube clip...

the C5 I sold had headers/hiflow cats (Dynamaxx) and Borla Stingers - it was loud (and even 1/4 throttle accelleration got the attention of every LEO in earshot), but I miss the sound... (I don't recall that blub blub blub idle with it, but it's been gone for a year+ now)

You need to go back and re-read this thread. It'sbeen covered multiple times now.

The 'Vette has teh same firing order as the GTO -same engine in fact. Go back and listen to the "BENCHMARK" vid. Same firing order.

Also, ALL MUSTANGS, from mid 80's until now, ALSO have theh same firing order as the current Corvette. How do they sound?
