Headers Vs. 4:10 Gears???

Video
I can take you for a ride anytime for you to see up close, we only live 1 town apart.
I've done some more performance mods since then, added a cam, L92 Heads and L76 manifold. Even with the extra 80 or so HP, the gas mileage and drivabilty with the 4.10s is still amazing. Check out this other video.
On a side note Ive been following your latest tranformation with interest and looking forward to the dyno results. Im getting itchy to make a decision on which way to go with my car. I missed you last time I was at Elite. My car has a date Tuesday with Kevin and Ritchie for my brake swap. Maybe I'll meet you and your car then.
gears usually help you fuel economy around town. so if you drive mix sometimes you will take no hit with gears at all.
with a .5:1 6th gear I honestly don't think milage would be a factor till 4:56 or lower for most.
I like the way gears make a car drive. most american manufactures leave some preformace on the table trying to avoid the gas guzzler tax.
I really like the way a car sounds with headers though.
I think you should jst decide if you like that tame exhaust sleeper aspect roll some gears. If you want that don't mess with me exhaust sound roll headers.
so my final answer is both. IMO they are both great mods and once you do one most likely your waranty is gone. If I do one I will do both no question.
You can't go wrong with either mod. But if I had to choose only one, I will have to say gears.
Last thing, some here will give you their opinions WITHOUT actually having these mods in their own car

The gears are a much better mod than a cam or headers IMHO and I've done all on several cars. If you've got one mod to do as I thought this thread was about, go gears.
Because AintQik and SpinMonster said so.
Seriously, I would do gears, because for me it's all about performance, not numbers. What on earth am I talking about? Well, I'm glad you asked.
HP/TQ vary as you move through the RPMs and peak numbers don't excite me unless they happen where I drive. Meaning that if I raced my car in the 1/4 I'd probably care more about peak HP than if it's a daily driver because in the 1/4 most of my driving is in the peak range (5K to 7K).
Headers are likely to add roughly 20 - 40 HP depending on other modifications. This will translate into better acceleration to some degree. Gears will not necessarily increase RW HP/TQ, but will likely result in MUCH improved acceleration over the headers (even though the numbers don't coroberate).
I think Spin said he thinks that going from stock A6 gears to 3.42, I would likely experience the equivalent of a 80 - 100 HP increase in real world acceleration. Now that's what I'm talking about!!!
Don't get your hopes up so high
This is not what happenedwhen I added headers then gears.

Just compare trap speeds of the geared cars before and after. About the same or a little less...
Now Compare the header cars before and after 3-4mph gain....
It's a no brainer to me, plus you drop 20-25lbs...
Re: gas mileage, with the steeper gearing rpm is higher, but throttle application to maintain a set speed is lower due to the gear multiplication. I didn't notice any difference in mpg when I added 4.10 gears to my C5. That said, you want to nail the throttle more to experience that torque hit to the back of your head, so maybe mpg can go down.

both are good mods though!

I'll tell you my mod process. My first mods were a Vararam, 4.10s, Borlas, and a CoW tune. I honestly didn't want to go nuts with this car
I researched it a lot and my personal opinion was that I did not want headers. The times that I saw weren't that impressive to me considering the price and possible noise annoyance seen from headers + catback on a daily driver. For a similar price gears have proven themselves time and again in many applications and their sotp was apparent at all rpms. My car was quick and had no noise or drivabilty issues. It wasn't until I gave in to the mod bug and decided to do a cam, that I chose to put headers on. It wouldn't make sense not to at this point. As you can see from my sig, I now have a fully built H/C/I motor so I am quite far from headers only. My car pulls like crazy and wont be sneaking up on anyone within a 2 block radius. It is a true daily driver, still with no drivability issues or mpg concerns. I have no regrets but every once in a while I miss the subtle civility of the stock(ish) LS2. Looking back if I had to do it all again. Gears would still be my first mod. Practically undetectable and just pure acceleration.Martinez, it would help if you gave a little more info. What are your ultimate goals for the car? Do you plan on going further with mods down the road? You have received many good opinions but have yet to comment other than your original post. I'm hoping this wasn't a stir-the-pot attempt. Things usually get ugly when 4.10s are mentioned.
I haven't done any MODS yet, but looks like gears will be first for me!
Im offically a gear head
