supposedly if you purchase the "proper" one they're fine, but I guess cheap ones are for older ls1's and they don't work right in our blocks or something to that effect? (leaks water by)
Not that I am aware of, especially if you live in a warm climate. Like the previous poster said, get a good thermostat like an SLP. I tried to Mr. Gasket brand thermostats first and neither worked properly. Then I purchased an SLP and it works great. Once you get the 160 stat installed you can have your fans adjusted to compensate for the new thermostat so you will get the full benefit of the lower temp stat.
I also recommend testing the thermostat before you install it to make sure it starts to open at 160 degrees. You can do this on the stove with a pot of water and a candy thermometer
I was going to buy a 160 stat, but after getting numerous PM's, I was told the car will run a bit too cool for it's own good. I'm not saying a 160 stat will ruin your car, I just decided not to do it.

I have one and my car runs fine now that I have a properly operating 160 degree thermostat. It's my opinion that if you live in a warm climate it helps keep the coolant temps down, especially in hot weather.
You can install a 160 thermostat with little improvement in cooling, unless you reprogram the fans. Once the fans are programmed, the benefits of the lower temperature opening are realized.
