Default 09 intake accumulator

i dont know how else to discribe it but its the "shell/ball" looking thing that looks like it accumulates air located in the air intake tube right before the TB.
Is it needed? I'm no engineer so i hate to assume anything but is it needed???? it looks to me that its not that it would cause some weird issue wit hflow but there has to be a reaso nfor it. Any input or thots on it would be great. thxs paul

Search Helmholtz resonator..Its for intake noise reduction. The Z06 intake tract is identical, except the standard C6 gets the extra plastic box on the side..

above is correct. alot of that stuff you see is for noise reduction. ie the valve covers the piece of plastic over your intake etc. its just to make the car quieter for the older owners.

Cut that ugly thing off! You don't need it. The Z06 has the identical intake without it.
