Correct. The black box records a continuous loop of certain kinds of data and stops recording once the airbags deploy.
Data includes throttle position, actuation of brakes, TC/ A/H.
I would love to know what all is stored and how long the loop is.
The "black box" is the Airbag Control Module located behind the HVAC controls in the dash. The time loop is 10 seconds, 5 seconds prior to accident, 5 seconds after. It records even under hard braking, considering that a near miss. This information is overwritten each time it feels the need to record. Only when the airbags deploy is the information recorded permanently and cannot be over written.
There is a great article about it on the internet. I'll find it and post a link.
There is some info on this in the owner's manual. I saw it not long ago, sort of an apology like "We don't do this to snoop on you, and it can only be retreived under a court order".
and it can only be retreived under a court order".
It might be better to check laws in your home state.
Section 9951 of the California Vehicle Code - Data stored in a “recording device” can only be downloaded by the registered owner of the motor vehicle, except under one of the following circumstances:
-The registered owner gives consent
-Where there is a court order
-For the purpose of improving motor safety
-By a licensed dealer or technician for diagnostics/repair.
dealers do not have access to black box info. The info is incrypted. An independent company is contracted by GM to download info and uploaded to GM. Usually happens when owner feels product failure caused an accident.
