Cutting hole in my hood- crazy?
#61
Holy crap Doug. A few spare hours on your hands??? Looks different and if you are happy with it, GREAT That should let some more heat out, it's hard to keep these cars cool around town. The water temps are one thing, exhaust and other temps are a different story all together.

I may need your help this spring to make my Z faster than Doug.

OK, call me crazy, but here it is. Actually the cut out went easier than expected. I have to tell you, it looks pretty good. I am planning to buy a World Challange hood, so I really didn't have anything to lose. I am going to give it some street time and see how it goes. Thanks for of all the feedback, I knew there would be some aggressive comments about this idea!

I have a 3" hole saw. I'm thinking of drilling some lightening holes in the body. Man, that'd be cool.

T/A, here is a shot from the inside of the hood. The inner liner has a brace so you can't go back any further. Same for going forward, another brace. I just followed the lines of the hood so the opening matches the crest on the hood:

Hey Doug,
I have some poly here if you were thinking about closing it off at some point. I'm in your area every couple weeks, I could drop it off some time.

I don't think it's that bad either. Doesn't fit the profile for rice since it actually has a purpose in allowing underhood hot air to be released. I can think of a couple of aftermarket hoods that look more like *** than his diy hood.

San, minute changes in aerodynamics play a very negligable role in the day to day operation of what seems to be primarily a street car. I didn't receive the impression that the OP is any sort of track rat. That considered, I don't feel the new "recess" will cause any more of a hinderance than it does allow a small amout of heat to exit. At speed, it will cool as normal, it's at idle and stationary where heat build up in the engine bay becomes tougher to fight. In that scenario, the open hood recess can't hurt for heat escape. May not offer much measureable improvement, but would offer even less measureable hinderance, I would imagine.

I agree, the lines look perfect. I also agree with your ZR1 comparison. It never ceases to amaze me what people will say on a forum that they would never say to your face. If you had only shown it cut and said that the plexi louver was on it's way, your box would be full with requests for info. You da man Doug.
