Removing steering wheel painted covers (caps) Need help!
Hello,
I will be removing the grey painted covers on my 07 z06's steering wheel to have them painted machine silver. I was thinking they just pop off, but dont want to break anything. Any help here would be appreciated. Also, does anyone know where I can get some already painted machine silver?
Thanks!!

You have to remove the air bag & a screw on either cover.
Its really not difficult. Spring clips hold the bag in, I used a section of clothes hanger to release them (an 1/8" dia punch would work better).
I covered mine with suede. Big improvement.

Be sure you know how to properly disconnect & remove the air bag before you just start fiddling around with it. It's not hard to do but you do need to do it correctly.

If you want a quicker and easier, but more expensive option, you can buy painted, CF, etc., overlay caps that attach on top of the OEM pieces.
Some actually wrap around the pieces and are undetectable.

Disconnect the battery and allow to sit for approx. 10 minutes, this kills the residual power to the airbag module. On the back side of the steering wheel, on either side, left and right, you will find two (2) holes. Turn the steering wheel so that one (1) of the holes is facing down. Insert a thin screwdriver and depress the tap and apply light pressure to the backside of the air bag and lift out. Turn the steering wheel 180* and repeat. Carefully disconnect the YELLOW connector from the airbag or just move it out of the way. There is a torx screw for each cover, I don't remember which size.
Go to auto parts store and buy one (1) Dupli-Color DSFM226 Silver Metallic, one (1) can of Clear and one (1) can of Prepsol or equivalent.
Wet sand the pieces with some 400 grit, clean with Prepsol and allow to air dry. Paint the color, allow to tack and then spray with the clear. Allow to dry and hand buff with some polishing compound.
You'll have enough to do all the plastic pieces in the car.
Why buy when you can enjoy the satisfaction of doing it yourself ?
