Default Z06 muffler baffle rattle fix?

I have z06 mufflers installed on my ls3 with m2w switch. In the closed pissition they rattle because the baffle is bad. This happened to me with my las car that also had this.. They seem to always go bad...for me

Is there any fix for this??

Thank you
Rod

I have fixed a few sets for a rattle at certain RPM's. We have found it is usually the inner wall of the muffler breaking the welds apart and causing it to rattle. When we do the muffler mod to them, we always add additional tack welds to the wall to prevent it from tearing apart.

I would assume you could go into a stock muffler and do the same thing, but I have never experienced a stock "un-modded" muffler to rattle.

Thanks Rich
It only happens when the baffle is closed. My last set got to the point that it didnt even close. It is the baffle itself.

I have seen the modded ones do it open and closed. Like I said, I have never seen it on a bone stock set though. I would imagine it could be the same thing. I would describe the typical sound they make when broken as 3-4 pieces of small metal dropped inside the muffler and rattling around.

Thats around the rpm that I get the rattle too. The mild to wild option is nice but Im considering ditching this gimik. Great idea, poorly executed. I wish there were an adjustment that could be made. Seems common from what I was told at the dealer.

Cutting them open tonight to weld the whole baffle in place.

I want to chime in and say I have the same problem.

M2W setup with Z06 mufflers. Just had the muffler mod done on my exhaust, problem still exists. Shop who did it also added additional tack weld... buzzing is still there around 2,000 rpm.

OK, did not take pics, as I was very dirty and did not think about it at the time. But will give you guys a good written description.

First I figured out it was only the driver side muffler rattling. so took it off, and cut open from the outside, (cut the inside when i did the Muffler mod) pulled the packing out, and the back wall/baffle (wall with the tips) was not cracked. and looked to be in place. BUT the front wall/baffle (side the over the axel pip come in on) was cracked. The crack was a fish hook shape, starting at one of the pipes, and swopped through the middle and back. we welded all the cracks up, and put tack weld on the baffles again to make sure I did not have to cut it open again. I don’t think the walls are going to move, but the baffle walls may split/crack who knows. not even sure how that happens but it did.

welded it all back up and installed and car has NO RATELS at all, quite or loud mode nothing but the exhaust note.

Bravo! Glad it worked out. Nothing is more important than the sound, because a rattle is straight up embarassing.

I get confused because the baffles are on the exhaust tips, not inside the muffler. Isnt that the baffle and what goes bad? I would
love to fix mine.

Have you ever seen a pic of the inside? it would make more since if you find the pic int he how to threads, then you can see the baffle wall i am talking about.

I bought modded z06 mufflers and I too am getting this same problem. Does the rattle happen for a brief second and only at a certain rpm or certain acceleration???

I sounds like someone shoving playing cards in a bicycle wheel right? and it also rattles a little when decelerating but goes away at lower rpms. It only occurs when you hit that particular rpm versus exhaust pressure...

I knew it was my exhaust... I will have to get someone to check this out for me.

my buzzing sound is EXACTLY at 2800 rpms... and then spontaneously stops after 3000 rpm

I had that same buzz around the same RPM, but only on light acceleration. At anything more than 50% throttle it didn't exist.

Mine started after I gutted the cats on the Z06 system I installed. Prior to that, there was no buzzing.

A few days ago I pulled the Z06 manifolds, gutted cats, and H-pipe and replaced with headers, cats, and x-pipe. Now the buzzing is gone, but a slight whistle showed up. I'm about to pull the cats and replace with the offroad pipe to hopefully get rid of the whistle.

What that tells me, is that the mufflers are not the culprit for the buzzing sound.

Mine was cracked completely. We opened up my exhaust and welded it up like crazy and NO MORE SOUND!
