Default zr1 shortblock with afr ls2 heads

Just wanted to know has anybody done this yet? I have a zr1 shortblock and wanting to put a pair of ls2 afr heads,so i can use the tvs2300 that is for a ls2. Would this combo be alright or can i just get my ls2 heads stage 3 ported.

thanks

Not hammering on you, but why do people keep trying to re-engineer every product out there. If you have a ZR1 shortblock why not use the ZR1 heads that were developed for the ZR1. It has little things like the bumps in the intake runners that actually help the engine's performance. No other heads have them, just those for the ZR1. Also the ZR1 heads have a thicker head surface and a grade of Aluminum better suited to being blown. Very good reasons why GM engineers just didn't grab a set of LS2(or even LS3) heads out of the parts bin.

Not sure, but wouldn't an E-Force(or any other TVS2300 blower) with runners developed for the LS3 heads flow better the the E-Force(or any other TVS2300 blower) runners that match the LS2 heads(even the afr?).

Cam Clearance Probably. Not to mention the AFR's probably flow better, especially if there massaged.

If you have the money get some TFS 225's with Inconnel exhaust valves. They will make gobs of power everywhere. The only downside to them is that they will make lots of power down low over LS3/ZR1 castings.... so you may not be able to hook it up

Otherwise LS3/L92/LS9 heads. My buddy ran some ported L92 heads with s/s intake and inconnel exhaust valves on a forged LS3 shortblock, LS9 gaskets, LS3 intake with ARP head studs running a single turbo making 950rwhp on e85. No head sealing issues.

You'd be better off selling the ZR1 short block and get you an LS2 or LS3 short built to boost specs. You can get the compression ratio where it needs to be and you won't have mismatched parts to contend with. What are you going to do about the dry sump set up on the Z short block?

Thanks for all the input everyone, I am going to be going with the ls9 heads and get the dry sump on there as well.

Not sure I follow you on the cam clearance.

We know the LS9 heads flow good as do the AFR's, but I was wondering about which blower would be best for the OP. One that is made for the LS3 ports or one made for the LS2 ports. I would think the blower made to fit the LS3/9 heads would flow better then the blower made for the LS2 heads.

The large intake valve of the LS3/9 heads limits PTV clearance of a big cam, though I don't know why you'd want to run a cam that large with a lot of overlap in a roots blown engine.

Since the OP didn't mention doing any MOD's to the LS9 shortblock, I assumed he meant it would have a LS9 cam also.

As mentioned above, if he had any plans on running a more aggressive cam and running higher compression to make the engine more efficiant those ls9 heads arnt gonna cut it.

I ordered up the afr 230 heads intead, just got to make the heads bolts to a 12mm, and put the stock ls9 cam in and should be good to go. It will still retain the 9.1.1 compression and run about 14lbs of boost with a aero1000 intank fuel pump, and a alky methanal injection system

Those heads should have smaller combustion chambers which will help with the compression ratio. I'd sure have Pat G spec you a custom cam vs using the stock LS9 cam. You're leaving a lot on the table there. Right now, you have a really good short block, really good heads, and **** for a cam.

"Bad"...hmmmm. It's actually a very fine cam. If you're not GM and don't need to have a car that's idiot proof and passes emissions, it can be improved upon. If you want smooth and don't care how much power it makes, use it. My car recently dynoed 642 at the wheels with less boost than a ZR1. Same blower. Not much difference between my car's motor and a ZR1 motor except the cam and more compression ratio. The Z does have a stronger short block, but that doesn't make it any faster. Stock Z's dyno around 540rwhp.

Yeah i probably will have to use it, over here we have emision testing every two years which really sucks! I kind of want a smoother running motor, but i would not mind at all swicthing it to a different cam that will not mess up with the emisions test, and give me more power.

Is this assumed? I have yet to see any flow data with a stock LS9 head that hits 300cfm. I have heard several head porters say that the swirl-inducing fin actually impedes flow, and is mostly removed during CNC programs. Why you might ask, then, would GM engineer something into the intake runner that impedes flow? Because flow isn't everything...particularly not with a positive displacement blower bolted to the heads. The two rotors provide plenty of it on their own.
