Default 2008 A6 replaced due to stall converter?

I installed a 3600rpm Yank converter in my 2008 Vette. After a year or so noticed the trans flaring and hunting for the correct gear. GM tried to repair the trans multiple times but could not, resulting in a replacement trans. The service manager claims the converter caused the problem and refused to put the Yank converter back in the car. Since this was a warranty I went with the stock converter. I did not race the car but also don't baby it. The tech told me that there were burnt clutches but said that seals were put in wrong at manufacture and caused the problem. Not my converter. Car works fine now but I do prefer the Yank stall. As stated I didn't race the car and did not add an additional trans cooler. Does anyone have a similar experience or opinion on this. I'm deciding on whether the Yank goes back in or not. Thanks in advance.

That manufacturing flaw was pretty common in '08 A6's. My opinion is that what your tech told you is correct. I am convinced my '08 A6 has that flaw but I was unsuccessful at convincing my local dealer of it so no repair for me.

That's something I would've done (install an auxiliary cooler) with a 3600 stall, especially if driving it real hard on a hot summer day/night...though if you didn't actually race it that probably wasn't too much of a factor.

i would send the converter back to get cut opened and checked for debris in it, see if clutches burnt, once you get it back put it back in, the dealer did the same thing to me on an 05 a4 trans, i put the converter back in and its been fine for 4 years

In my experience, the racing part creates less heat than heavy city traffic or uphill grades. The longterm heat is a bigger threat to longevity than a few quick passes at the track.

I am surprised the dealer did anything since you modified it.

The trans flare issue a known issue on the GM A6's. My 2009 G8 GXP had the issue and the dealer put the new pump seals in to fix mine.

Would a DeWitt radiator (auto model) help if you did not want to install an external cooler?

On the surface one would think it definitely should as a more efficient radiator should also mean a cooler running motor.
But a larger/more efficient radiator might also absorb or hold more heat in (better in there than in the motor of course) if it's doing it's job well and that would also mean that the factory transmission cooler that runs through it will also run potentially hotter.
But please don't quote me on that LOL.

I think the aftermarket/auxiliary trans cooler is still the best way to go, whether it's run in conjunction with the stock/factory one that still runs through the radiator or bypasses the radiator entirely and acts as the sole trans cooler.

I agree, send it back to Yank, have them open, inspect and reinstall.
I have one in my car, it's been flawless.
I do run my car and live in Fl so temps are a problem, I installed a Cooler and temps are no issue.
good Luck!
