Default Cost of Harmonic Balancer install?

I have an 05 coupe with 46,000 miles and I have read about balancer problems but glossed over it. Today when I started it up "SQUEEEEK". I pooped the lid and looked at the balancer and it has a wobble. I know the SLP is the one and for less than $200 no problem, but what should it cost to have it swapped?

I know at the stealership, they charge around $1,700 for labor in Alaska, not sure about other states. I'm currently awaiting on harmonic balancer to arrive at dealer for it to be installed.

Stock replacement at a dealer should be in the $900 to $1000 range for the part and labor from past experience.

Mine replaced at the dealer about a 14 months ago for ~$950. About 10K miles later and no problems (insert tree ...knock on wood).

So I'm guessing the labor was about 650-700.

Yep, perfect time for a cam swap... Only about another hour of work as well.

$1,700 for JUST labor? So a little over $2K total? I hope that came with Vaseline; you are getting seriously ripped off. It's no harder for a dealer to turn a wrench in Alaska than it is in any other part of the country. The total cost for parts and labor should be ~$1K. I did it on my C5 and my friend priced it out on his C6 but I ended up helping him do it instead.

Good choice going with the SLP pulley op. As others have said, if you're ever planning on doing a cam swap this is the time. 90% of the labor for a cam swap is already done by the time you get the balancer off.

$1,700 is close to what I paid to have mine done in these parts as well but that included a water pump, idler pulley, belt tensioner and new serpentine belt.

The powerbond harmonic balancer that was installed was supplied by myself - no GM replacement required!

I don't understand why it should cost $1000 for labor when I'm told it should take about an hour?

Simple, because it takes about 6 hours done by GM specifications.

I don't think anyone can do it in an hour on the C6. On the 4th gen Camaro, it was pretty easy, but the vette has too much stuff in the way. Floyd's $150 was unusually inexpensive and $1k buys cam swap labor and a tune at a lot of good speed shops.

My dealer originally quoted the job at 1300 bucks parts and labor included. Even though my car is an 06 he warrantied the job for me. GM knows about this problem and if you complain hard enough they should warranty it for you. Depends on the dealer and if they are willing to go to bat for you. Print out as many pages as you can find on the issue. That might just help you out a little. I was lucky my service manager knows me for a few gets now and we've become buddy's so that may have helped me a bit.

On another note. Is no where near a 1 hour job. Just because it looks like it easy to get to doesn't mean it is. It's more like a 6-8 hour job.

Well i took my 05 coupe to the doctor to diagnose the squeek, and I was right but with an extra. Not just the balancer, but the front seal as well. As for price, I got 2. One from the performance used car dealer that I bought it from and one from a local well know speed shop. $850 from the speed shop and $1000 from the dealer. I think I'll plan on an CAI and a tune along with, since it i'll be there and take it to the speed shop. I also found out today that I need some surgery, so that should be the perfect time to give it to them.
Wish us both luck.

To clarify, I would never pay that price for a install. I'm still under warranty and was curious what the price would be not covered and the service manager quoted me $1,700 for labor and 2k with install. I thought it was ridiculous and would do the install myself if I had to pay.

Oh, good. I was thinking you actually paid that. What a ridiculous quote... I can't believe a dealer would charge that.

Alaska is a beautiful place, but the customer service here "sucks" at most dealerships, because of no other competition in the area, so they have no problem with jacking up the prices on repairs and parts. I'll be back in the real world in September and can't wait.....

I just pulled my cam out this wekend on a Grand Sport which has a few extra things to get it the way and it took 6 hours, if i just had to go in after the balancer for a swap I would bet I could do it under fours hours, so a Corvette shop should be able to do it in 2.5 - 3 hours (shops around here are $100 an hour). So $500 total or so including a new stock balancer and new bolt ($135) and oil change ($48) for good measure is my guess.

1 hour would be pretty much impossible. 1.5-2 hour is what it takes if the shop knows how to replace the pulley properly and quickly.

That's why I only paid $150

So I got my Onstar report today in my email, and saw a link for warranty. What the heck, I clicked it. and found an 8 year 80,000 emissions warranty still in effect, and a 10 year 120,000 "Special 07301 warranty" still in effect. I hoped upon hope that maybe it was the harmonic balancer, but no. It's for the fuel filler cap,,,,,that I replace last year,,, at my own expense,,,, that the dealer sold to me,,,and should have be free.
