Hey Guys,

I am in the process of spec'ing a fuel cell for my car and I need to spec the correct sending unit from FuelSafe. The car is an 09 Z06 (LS7) I do not have the stock sender anymore and I was wondering if it is the standard 0-90ohm or if they changed it for some reason in these cars, thanks for any help!

Your car has two fuel senders. One in each Tank. They each read 41 ohms (empty) and 252 ohms (full). The right tank is reading from half full to full on your gauge and the left tank is reading empty to half full. The ECM uses the both tanks readings to determine what the fuel gauge will display.

Well that certainly does not make this easy. :P I wonder if the ECU can be modified to accept a different fuel level sender. Maybe I put a regular fuel level sender in the fuel cell and then try to program the ECU to that although I am not sure that is possible.

The ECU and engine are out of an 09 Z06 but the motor is going into an E30 M3 so the factory cluster will not matter. For whatever that is worth.

In that case you would match the fuel level sender to whatever gauge you are going to use. Do you have one in mind?

You will get a couple of codes due to the fact the fuel sensors are missing. The EVAP system uses/monitors the level of fuel in the tanks to command the different EVAP tests. If you have HP tuners or EFI Live then you can turn these codes off. You most likely won't be using the EVAP system.

Your fuel level sensor will not be in any way hooked up to the ECM.

No, no EVAP system for me. I am HOPING to use the stock ECM and then use an AiM Pista Icon dash that pulls the data from the ECM via the 232 port. It would be nice if I could simply use a GM 0-90ohm sender in the fuel cell and then have the ECM altered to read that sender instead of the stock one.

In this case you will need a separate fuel gauge.

It might be possible if you used a different cars tune. One which only uses one fuel tank and sender. For example Pontiac GXP with the LS3.

Most modern GM vehicles use the 40 ohm empty and 250 ohm full gauge.

I got to put up a warning here. The resistance readings used to be 40 ohms empty and 250 ohms full for the fuel level sensor, but in the 2007 - Present they are reversed. The wiring was changed at the sender circuit card and you will end up with the fuel gauge working backwards if you get it wrong.

I am still trying to figure out how to accomplish this fuel level issue. Basically, the AiM dash will pull all the needed data from the OBDII port and display it on the dash. I am going to be running a fuel cell and I need to spec a single sending unit that the E38 ECM will understand. I was hoping to be able to change this in the ECM but I spoke to a tuner and they told me that the these cannot be changed.

What cars out there work with E38 ECU that have a single fuel sender? I think this maybe the best route to go.

Where can I confirm this? Looking into replacing mine but the auto store has both pump. One reading 40 empty and 250 full. Second reading 250 empty and 40 full.

Service manual will tell you, but if you google it you will find plenty of confirmation. If you get it backwards the level will read wrong.
