Default Mobil 1 5w-40?

Hey guys I recently purchased my first corvette. A 2008 Atomic orange z06 with 3500 miles on it. I was just wondering(yes I searched but couldn't find my specific answer) if running Mobil 1 5w40 in the car will be okay instead of the 5w30? The reason I ask is because I get it free. Thanks in advance.

You are only talking less than 30$ for 6ea 5w30 and almost any place.
I would not do it but it probably would not do much damage.

I wouldn't. Here's what the 2008 owner's manual says on page 5-22.

SAE 5W-30
As shown in the viscosity chart, SAE 5W-30 is best for your vehicle.
These numbers on an oil container show its viscosity, or thickness. Do not use other viscosity oils such as SAE 20W-50.
Swap oil with someone else to get the right one.

Thanks guys. I figured I'd just ask for the convenience. I see a lot of people running 0w40 and 10w30's so I just wanted an opinion. I'll stick with what it calls for

I use 5/30 wt to keep with the factory warranty/engineering but 5/40 wt would probably protect your engine better, IMO. Thin like factory at start up, yet I will be thicker (more protection) under heat; however thicker oil requires more hp to turn the oil pump.

I have a "need for speed".

Depends on what you're doing with it and where you live. If you're tracking it or driving it hard a 0/40 or 5/40 probably wouldn't be a bad idea.

I live in NJ. I don't really drive the car hard at all. It's more of a daily/enjoy driving car than anything. I don't think it would hurt anything but I wanna be sure. I've ran 5w40 in my old turbo race engines but I had slightly higher oil clearances.

The 5W-30 spec is what GM reccommends for 95% of the public to have the engine last a minimum of 150,000 miles. If by some stretch of imagination 5W-40 shortened the life by 10%, you'd still be at a 135,000 mile minimum. The car you bought (5 years old/3,500 miles), most likely needs all the fluids changed, due to humidity/moisture from not being driven much.

Yeah I'm definitely going to change all the fluids. Should I go by all the specs in the owners manual or do you guys recommend different fluids for trans, rear, brake fluid, clutch fluid etc...?

Well I run a different brake fluid and different oil than came with it.

0w40 oil and DOT 4 brake fluid.

More protection and more drag on engine parts. This is a nono.

Except that it's free (how do you do that?), there should never be a reason to change from the factory recommended oil viscosity and type. I wouldn't do it.

The factory may also recommend a different viscosity for different seasons, climates, usage, etc.
