supercharged 05' need drag radial suggestions
Hi guys. I think this is a popular subject from the research I have done on the forum so far. Your help is appreciated.
I am trying to find a solution for my dad to hook up at the drag strip. The 285 Michelin PS2's he has on don't hook very well at all.
He has an 05' Z51 auto vert with the Edelbrock E-force supercharger, Billy Boat catback, and dynotune. Makes around 525 rwhp if I remember correctly.
Can you share some of your experiences with drag radials on for this range of power. What would be the best size tire to run? (Rim size, tire width?) We would most likely buy an extra set of rims so we can switch them out before we hit the track.
Thanks again!

06 Vert, A6, LS2 with E-Force, 10lbs of boost, Alky Control Meth injection, 305/35R18 MT ET Street Radials - work great for my combination. There are many wheel/tire combinations that will work for you (or your dad). This forum is full of good examples. I plan on changing my wheel/tire combination for next spring going with Weld RT-S wheels as follows: (Front - P225/45R18 with Weld 18" X 8") and (Rear - P295/45R17 with Weld 17 X 10.5"). My current package works well but I will be adding a Yank 2800 Stall and will upgrade my wheel/tire package to accommodate the new converter. It is not necessary for the change but something I want to do for perhaps a small improvement over what I am running today.

I am using 18" rear wheels with MT 305/35x18" .. I have a FTI 2800 converter and my 60' times are around 1.60 - 1.65 on a good track..I am now in the process of putting in a 403 ci stroker motor, with a FAST 102 intake etc...etc...
I might have to change to 17" rear wheels also, but I'll give the 18" a try first...
My best ET with the stock ci motor is 1.59 @ 118 mph.. only a converter, and Kooks headers...

Is 275 wide enough to hook up really good for that power level ? It must as I have seen that size mentioned many times. Haven't looked at the Hoosiers yet. You are talking about their drag radial I presume? Would it be better yet to go wider with a say a 285 or 295 or 305? Guess I'm not sure if 295 or 305 even fits in stock C6 rear fenders. Trying to do this on sort of a budget since we don't go to the strip more than a couple times in the summer. Also sounds like from research that having some more sidewall helps launch too?
Sorry about all the questions. New territory for us. Thanks.

I have heard that the 05' rear end can be a little dicey. Would it then be better to er on the side of caution and stay with a 275 width to allow a little wheelspin instead of a 295 or 305 and hook up hard and risk breaking something? I am just a little skeptical that a 275 DR can provide that much better traction than a 285 Michelin PS2. Perhaps we won't know until we try it.

Here is a good read from spinmonster on drag radials if you haven't read it yet.

My dad's 05' is an auto. Did they perhaps put a different rear on the auto? Have you seen a lot of them fail and at what power level?
Would you recommend just staying away from DR's with an 05' rear with auto trans then?
Or maybe we go with something a little less sticky but still better than Michelin PS2, like say Nitto NT05 ?
We maybe go to the strip 1-2 times in the summer and dad just wants to be able to hook up better instead of smoking tires for the first 60-100 feet.
I know we are kind of newbies at this so we appreciate your patience and help. Thanks.

I have a FTI 2800 converter, Kooks Headers, Vararam CAI, FAST 102 intake... & am using MT DR.... size 305/35x18"
I have heard 99% of the 05 rears end that broke were in "MANUAL" cars NOT Automatic's....
I've never had any rear end problems, and my 60' times are around 1.65 with a BEST of 1.58.... My 1/4 mile times are a best of 11.59 @ 118 mph...
The rear ends that break are usually on stick shift cars, & the driver starts to get "Wheel Hop" and DOES NOT let off the gas and try's to make a run ...(instead of just letting off the gas)
I've NEVER experienced any wheel hop, while using Micky Thompson drag radials... its the OEM or street tires that cause "Wheel Hop" and that = a broken rear end...
My car is in the shop now getting a new 403 ci stroker motor it should run in the low 11's or even high 10 sec runs.. & I plan on leaving the stock 3.15 rear end in it...

I also have an 05 automatic (A4) and I bought it with 3,000 miles on it in 2007.. I now has 45,000 miles on it and I drag race it almost every weekend during the racing season (March through November)

What are you using for rear wheels with the MT DR.... size 305/35x18" ?? Where did you buy the tires and wheels? Any links or pictures would be great! Thanks.
