2006 A6 shift button won't depress

2006 A6 shift button won't depress
Does anyone know where to start looking for this problem? at the shifter console inside the car or underneath at the transmission? The button won't go down so it won't shift to park (luckily I didn't get stuck in park somewhere) had to leave it in neutral and disconnect the battery.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

If you aren't handy, you'll need to buy a new shifter and have it installed.......you may end up doing that anyway.
