If you want them to function as "dual mode" mufflers then you will need one of the aftermarket kits.

You can just install the mufflers with no kit and they will be open "loud" all the time. If you hook an active vacuum line to them they will be closed "quiet" all the time. Gotta have something to switch between vacuum and no vacuum for them to function.

Not true. I just did my own. I used a 12v vacuum solenoid from a toyota 4-runner which is normaly open and a check valve to keep it quiet on start up. My switch is on the side of the console. I got about $30 in the whole setup.

Well that's lovely. BUT you have SOMETHING to control the mufflers. NOT JUST a vacuum line.

Why don't you do a full write up and tell the OP how to do it your way?

WARNING! This is only for people who can work on their own cars.
Buy this solenoid switch (http://www.ebay.com/itm/230954208046), check valve, 20' of 5/32 vacuum hose, a couple tees, and a rocker switch. 1 hour of install time and done. I pulled my vacuum solenoid from a wrecked vehicle. Just about every Toyota from 88-05 had one. Good luck!
