Engine Oil Life Monitor Question?
So I just finished an 8 day 3600 mile road trip with my convertible LS-2 C6.
Before the trip I had an oil and filter change; Mobil 1.
After the trip the oil monitor shows 75% oil life remaining.
Does this sound right? I would have thought more like 30-50% remaining, considering the high ambient temps encountered, a fair bit of freeway cruising, etc.
Extrapolating the 75% remaining, one could theoretically drive 14,400 miles on one oil change. I know synthetic oils are way better than dino oils, but I would never think of driving that far on an oil change.
Any comments out there?

I'm not surprised. When I first got my '08, I took several long business/pleasure trips as a break from lots of plane rides. My first 4 oil changes came at 14,167, 16,441, 11,330, and 14,226. I've never gotten less than 10K and I never change oil before 3%.
Consider this: At 60 mph on the freeway, your engine is turning about 1300 rpm and you've traveled a mile in a minute. When your stuck in traffic and have to wait for two changes of the light to get through the intersection, you've taken two minutes to go 200 feet and your engine at a wee bit over a 600 rpm idle has also rotated 1300 times. Now which 1300 revolutions produced the most change in your odometer?
Maybe someday when I'm going to be on a destination type trip and using the Interstate, I'll set my cruise control to 75 and see how many miles it takes to knock off 1% on the OLM. I already know I can do that in 10 miles (10 passes) at the dragstrip.

Not quite. The OLM only deals with lower oil temperature as a factor at startup. Ambient is not a direct concern. There is no preset mileage service interval. It's possible to go from 100% to 0% and never move the car.

OK thanks for all the feedback.
I had no idea the recommended oil change interval is 15 thou. Guess I could have checked the manual.
Nevertheless, the car wont get more than 3-4 thou miles a year, and I change the oil every year regardless of miles.
The way I figure it oil and filter changes are one of the least expensive maintenance items, so why push it?

Remember that highway driving is by far the easiest driving that you can do for the car. The oil monitor will allow you to go much further on an oil change if all the driving is at a steady speed on the highway....much further than if the miles were put on in city stop and go traffic

You might consider using the Vette for longer trips than just across town or short cruises. It's a great road trip car.

There is no 15K mile recommendation. The owner's manual clearly states to follow the OLM for changes and never mentions mileage. The once a year change is a holdover from decades ago and was there to provide a reminder for those people who never paid attention to the mileage. GM may also use that as a reason to deny warranty service, but I've yet to hear that happening.

Climate is defined as the composite or generally prevailing weather conditions of a region, as temperature, air pressure, humidity, precipitation, sunshine, cloudiness, and winds, throughout the year, averaged over a series of years.
The ambient temperature sensor is only for outside air temperature, has no ties to the OLM, and the operating range is from -30 C (-22 F) to 51 C (123.8 F). Only the temperature of the oil is part of the OLM algorithm.

Just let her do part of the driving, while you google the UPS stores and USPS offices to ship the stuff home. If she's grinning, you're happy too.
