Default 3" NPP Z06 mufflers on base A6 car?

Heard that they fit and they don't fit. Have a 2012 base coupe A6 car and a pair of Z06 NPP mufflers. Is it much of a mod to make them work?
Or would I just be better off just cutting the pipes off of my stockers and using those? Has anybody done this?
would like to get some Z06 manifolds, cats, and hpipe if the mufflers could be easily modified to get around the A6 trans

I put Z06 mufflers on my 2006 A6, but I cut the 3" pipes off and welded on a 2 1/2" adapter then used my stock pipes with clamps. If you look under a Z06 you will see that your A6 trans is much wider. I have heard that they will fit, but I hate when exhaust pipes rattle on something and if they have to be moved wider for the trans, how can you do this, you would have to bend the pipes.

I had a muffler shop cut off the mufflers on both set of pipes and install them on my ‘05. I know the early Z06 mufflers necked down to 2-1/2” right at the muffler with enough to weld on to the stock pipes. I never did add the vacuum control as the sounded really good wide open all the time.

I was told the mufflers I have were from a 2013 and they neck down to 21/2" right at the muffler too

The way that brimee described provides the most power. I did mine 10 years ago and I've written the method here several times and done it on a few friend's cars too.

Lots of people here seem to think that mufflers include a bunch of pipe, since they haven't seen or worked on older cars where the mufflers only had a couple inches of pipe on each end. It sometimes makes it hard to explain, but you cut the pipe off your stock muffler as close as possible. Then cut the pipe off the Z06 muffler about 3/4" from the can. Your stock pipe will then fit into the Z06 muffler just enough to leave room for the welding. Mark your stock pipe to align with the muffler seam to simplify location for welding. Tack and test fit.

this was my "plan A" after looking at the mufflers, was just wondering if it was possible to tweak the 3" pipes to make them work.

I just tried putting 3" Z06 on my 08 A6 base last weekend, the driver side hits the shift linkage bolt on the trans. I could not find a way to easily make the Z system fit with keeping the mufflers attached. My car sas twin turbos with custom 3" x pipe so I cut off the over pipes and running a 3" straight sections to the tips. A Z system would work fine with an M6 car but unfortunately I could not get it to work with my A6.

I also had a set that I tried to put on my A6, no dice. Unless you want to beat and bend the pipe all up to make clearance.. Just wasn't worth it to me. Sold them and waited out for an NPP set to come along.

I have resigned myself to knowing the 3" pipes won't work. Going to cut my original pipes off of my mufflers and cut the 3" pipes about 3/4" away from the mufflers and weld them up. I got a great deal on my z06 npp's so this is how I'm going to proceed. Thanks for all your insight.

Your on the right track. I did mine that way and it worked perfectly. Just take the time to draw good scribe marks on the pipes, as mentioned earlier. Let me how the sound level works out. My 08 Npp is to loud for me on the highway. I love it when I get on it, but cruising is to loud and I understand that the Z06 system might be a bit quieter than the NPP.
