C6 Temps on a Long drive during Summer -

I live in Reno just did a 500 mile trip to the North Bay and back 2008 C6 Z51 A6 Coupe with the top off. Outside temps 90 @ 72 MPH engine oil temp 230-235 Coolant 196 trans temp 174 does have factory engine and transmission oil coolers. Also got 27.9 MPG Zero problems. Your temps are normal. If you put a 160 in it once it's open it will have no affect for extra cooling.

jeff64: Could you explain why 70% water is to much?...50/50 will protect it from freezing at -32 degrees below '0' and boiling point up to 265 degrees F...If i lived in Alaska, then i would run 50/50...We have been in triple digits temps down here in South Texas for a few months now.My 08 is cammed, headers and tuned and my coolant never goes over 207 in stop & go traffic just cruising around 198 or less and i have never seen my engine oil temp go over 220 degrees and that is when I'm doing some hot rodding down some country roads and my tranny might get up to around 200 degrees when I'm using the paddles to shift at redline...Oh..180 stat.

The information problem is going to get worse as more 2nd, 3rd, and 4th C6 owners join the forum. They tend to revive old threads or start new ones without doing basic research. The fact that earlier owners may have made mods or did upgrades using factory parts, certainly isn't going to help identify problems.

Update: So I removed about a gallon of 50/50 coolant mix and added one bottle of Red Line water wetter and remainder distilled water. I drove in stop and go traffic with 79* weather, engine coolant temps seem to have dropped a few degrees and staying more stable. I need to do further testing in hotter weather and highway speeds to compare. My car is boosted and drive it only on weekends.
I do not have engine coolant issues, but just trying to keep coolants temps down so not to trigger any K.R. (knock retard).
Dewitts radiator, reprogramed fan, 160* T-stat and now one bottle of Red Line water wetter.
Stay tune for a later update.

You have a Dewitts rad, which is an oversized tank, so obviously you'll have lower temps.

If your average speed is 30-40 mph, you must be driving hard between stoplights.
To get a better feel for city vs hwy, reset your average speed once your coolant reaches 190 for city driving. Compare that to open hwy after 5 miles of a steady 65 MPH.
Your short trip to Vegas won't see 200* while moving, but it'll hit 220+ once you get in town.
When you do your coolant flush, don't forget to use a water wand to clean the radiator and condenser from the 10 years of crud build up. That's the bigger part of keeping cool.

It's great that your temps are so low. Did you change the radiator while doing the mods? Also, since you have a tune, chances are the fan settings are changed. What else are you doing to keep such low temps?

Keeping temps in check is always a good idea. Today was 75* here. My oil temp: 235, Coolant: 219-220, tranny(A6): 220. City driving 30-40mph. I don't care if these are "normal" temps, I want mine lower that these...

At 203*-207* my fan is running between 75%-85%. The stock tune is only 23%-31%. So with my combo: Dewitts radiator, 160 t-stat, earlier fan setting, the cooling process starts sooner with more air flow to a larger capacity radiator and now water wetter which all work together keeping my average cooling temps down in city driving.
I need to do more city driving before I can make any conclusions, but so far it has been positive. The real test will be in triple digit ambient temps, especially with a boosted application.

^ I'm going to use a pressure washer to spray all the fins radiator & AC (with low pressure). I don't believe there's anything stuck or sucked up under the radiator, but will look.
Will remove all old coolant. Fill with Distilled water and go for a short drive. Remove water. Then do it again, until water comes out clean. I'd like to clean out the inside of the radiator and heater core using the back flow method (any tips would be helpful).
After draining all the water, until nothing comes out, I'll then fill about 3/4 of the coolant jug + 1 bottle WW + Distilled water. That should give close to a 30/70 ratio I suspect.
