Default Ls2 to ls3

Hello all

I threw a rod in my 05 ls2 After getting past the anger, depression, and sadness I'm now searching for the best way to go about getting her back on the road. Not having torn into the motor I have no idea how much real damage is done and what can or can't be saved. Bottom end was stock, top end, from cam on up not stock. Was looking into short blocks but without knowing of everything up top is good, I'm not sure it won't cost a lot more if I have to start replacing stuff; heads, valves, or even the cam. Yesterday one of my coworkers told me his mechanic for his cars has a totaled 09 Vette w/29,000 miles out behind his shop (wrapped around a pole just behind drivers door) that he was gonna transplant the motor/transmission into a S10. He's decided not to go forward with that and offered the motor to me for $4000.
my question is, how difficult of a swap would this be? Fitment issues- bolt right up to my tranny (6spd)? My headers? Will I need the computer from that car or reprogram mine? I'm thinking i can't use his cause the 09 is an auto but I don't know.

any advice or knowledge of doing such a swap is greatly appreciated.

The biggest issue to start off with is your engine has a 24 tooth reluctor wheel and beginning in 2006 they switched to a 58 tooth. Although Lingenfelter makes an add-on kit to allow a newer motor in an older car, I wouldn't recommend it as they're pretty unreliable. At a bare minimum you're looking at having to pull the crank and change it to a 24 tooth reluctor.

Regarding the computer, you can tweak your tune to work with the newer motor as I put a newer LS7 in my buddy's 2005.

The injectors and intake manifold will plug right in to your car but you will need a couple of pigtail connectors for the cam sensor and MAF if you decide to switch over to the one from the newer engine.

Beyond that, everything else external to the engine will bolt up fine including your exhaust. Even though the exhaust ports are a little different you can still use your existing setup as I ran LS2 headers on my LS7 swap for years, including when I ran 9.950 with it.

If "I threw a rod" means it actually broke and you can hear parts clanking around inside there'll be little that's salvageable.

If however you only just spun a bearing then your best (and cheapest) option would be to just have it rebuilt.

Feel free to PM me if you have more questions or would like to talk on the phone.

All things aside, a complete '09 LS3 w/29K mile for $4K is a pretty solid deal IMO.

I know right! Up until the whole 24 tooth reluctor I thought my prayers had been answered lol I may just have to see how much for the trans to be added to the swap??

Now you're talking...grab the trans and diff maybe as well. Based on the description of the vehicle, I doubt the torque tube is salvageable. That motor as it sits could fetch $6K...I'd offer $5K for everything in the drive-line that's salvageable and see what he says.

Assuming it's in good condition, $4k for a 29k mile LS3 is a pretty good deal. I think those motors go for $10-15k in the crate.
