How Do I make my car sound louder and more choppy?
Hey guys, just doing some research on "How Do I make my car sound louder and more choppy." I figure I'd do some reading, but also wanted to as the forum.
I have a 2005 base Vet. Ls2.
Thanks

Choppy ... Why do you want it to sound "Choppy"? ... The choppy sound you sometimes hear in a C6 is the result of a much larger aftermarket cam with lots of duration and overlap ... Most people that install a bigger camshaft are looking for big HP gains, not just some "Choppy" sound.
Want a real choppy sound without spending money on a cam install? .... pull off a couple of plug wires!

Thanks for your reply. I'm OK with getting new mufflers if thats all it will take. Doesn't sound too expensive. As for the choppy sound. I just kinda like the way it sounds. I am not really after more HP. I'm not a racer. What about headers? What do they do?
Thanks bud.

Headers and a good dyno tune will get you about a 35 RWHP increase on the dyno

You won't get a more choppy sound with just mufflers. You need to change the cam to get that.
Actually a cam will help with both things you're looking for - I'd do that first, then muffler swap if it's still not loud enough. Just call any of the major vendors and ask for a choppy sounding cam. It'll be easier since you don't care if it makes more power anyways, so you'll have plenty of options depending how much chop you want.

I really like my LS3 but the exhaust sound doesn't do it for me. I have NPP with the fuse
pulled and it isn't loud enough for me. The LS exhaust sound almost seems like a
foreign car sound. I would like a exhaust that sounds like a 60-70"s muscle car.

I have a 2010 LS3 myself and didn't care for the stock exhaust sound. I have since have installed a set of Flow Master American Thunder 40series mufflers. It was a tricky install for my muffler shop guys but its an awesome performance/aggressive sound.

A tune can make it sound choppy at an idle for about 20 seconds by altering the short term fuel trims. That choppy sound will go away as the computer tries to smooth out the idle. Once you touch the throttle again and then back off to an idle, it'll be choppy for another 20 seconds. That'd probably cost $400-500, since it's not something tuners normally do. You could also tap into a vacuum line and have a switch to open/close it to atmosphere, which would make the engine run lean. You might be able to make that for $10, if you make it only open at an idle, since it'd cost you an engine if you forget and leave it open all the time.
Louder can be done by poking/drilling holes in your muffler or exhaust pipe until it sounds right to you.
Disclaimer: I'm just answering the question you asked. If you wanted an opinion, I'd tell you not to do it.

I would never recommend a cam swap for somebody that just wants to hear it.
Even though I am guilty of doing this- cam swap when unnecessary just for the 'sound'- I can get away with it because I am surgically and professionally clean when performing this labor.
Whereas if you take it somewhere or try to do it yourself it is far more likely to ruin the engine for a variety of reasons. Hate to say it but 20 years of experience has taught me that.

Flow-master American thunder 40 Series Mufflers installed ( i have used this same setup on my 04 Cadillac, my 95 Yukon, my 86 Firebird and always the sweet sound of tough performance) no cat back, just the muffler, I contacted Summit racing and told them i need the offsets of the muffler to be on opposite ends and they helped me with the correct part number. $85 each and $100 install from a great local muffler shop ( who showed me they had the skills) and the rest is sweet sounding, performance throaty sounds. This is a stationary video, trust me when i say the sound so cool when you are in third gear at 3k rpm and let off the gas, the rumble makes me smile all the time. Matter of fact, there was a time when i was in between radios, and I really didn't mind !!!

Just drill big ole holes in the mufflers. That's wut I did and it's guud. There is a huge, old thread on how to do it. Reel cheep.
Actually, it can be done properly and neat covers installed. Perhaps later I can replace the now-hacked mufflers with Borla or Corsa products.
edit: yes, there is some drone at 1,500 RPM. Either turn the stereo up louder, or drive at a speed which requires more than 1,500 RPM. duh.
As an example, driving from Flagstaff back to Denver through Albuquerque, the speed limit was 75 all the way. No problem. and 31 MPG as well.

As soon as I can hear the engine, I know it isn't very fast and that the owner is not very knowledgeable about cars, 'stuck in kid mode'. Doesn't have time to become a professional at building cars.
It isn't for everyone. But the very idea that noise = power is a dead give away of a novice behavior.

Noise is a give-away of a novice? Until I bought my Corvette, I always said that cars are just passé ... that's French for *****-WHIPPED, in case you don't know that word. THIS (refer to image attached) IS LOUD. YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE HOW LOUD. and it is not for novices. (The 235 cubic inch 4 cylinder Lycoming has no mufflers at all. Tops out at 235 MPH.)* ...* Novice much?
