Default Can I add Steering wheel controls to a 2005 Coupe

Hi I have a 2005 Coupe with Nav and Bose that I just replaced the Nav Head with a 2012 USB Nav Head. The Clock now works! Can I add Steering wheel controls? I have found a steering wheel with controls, Air bag and Clockspring with column harness for a great price. I almost had it shipped but Im worried that it cant be done. Anyone? Ive read that the SWC controls go through the CAN and won't work on an 05 Any help is appreciated as I would like to add controls. Also anyone using a Costar Bluestar II. Can I have the voice controls on the wheel using one of these adapters with the onstar bypassed.

Thanks In Advance Paul

I have the newer radio and can get the wheel and parts.

I read somewhere the 05 CAN won't accept SW controls.
Does anybody know if it will work with a 2010 SW and a 2012 Nav Radio?
Will the left buttons for Voice control work for the onstar replacement module Costar Bluestar two?

Just want to make sure before I order the SW, Air Bag, Clockspring and harness for $325

The link i posted is for using an OEM head unit like yours. I reused the plug from the 05 clock spring and put it on the new clock spring and that made the horn and air bag operate. The buttons on the left for phone/Bluetooth work with my Kenwood to answer the phone and hang up. I have no Idea if onstar will work. Their are only three wires to make SWC work. One is to illuminate the buttons when you turn on headlights the second wire is for power to the buttons 5VDC and the third wire is the output or signal when you push the buttons.

So the Signal output wire for the right goes directly to the back of the stereo and it looks like the left controls go on the same line. I saw a post somewhere that said the CAN in an 05 wasn't compatible. He may have been misinformed or was talking about something different. Maybe I should just get a wheel with the right side controls. I don't want to use an aftermarket radio as I like the directions in the HUD.

05 is the only C6 that uses the previous generation computer, so there maybe some truth in the CAN issue.

On mine I have buttons on both sides and they work But I have a non OEM head unit. You are correct the signal wire goes to the radio through the factory radio plug. On your 05 you will have to add two wires to the factory plug. That link shows you how to do it.

Is yours an 05? So it doesn't have a problem with the CAN.

Did you try this with the OEM Nav Head before installing the Kenwood?

OK I'm Game. $325 won't Kill me. I wonder if it will answer the phone with a Costar Bluestar II? Anyone?

I want my Car all Vette. The Costar adapter just bypasses the Onstar Module and is easily removed and then Plug Onstar back. I just sold a `17 Z06 to pay for a 1 Bedroom Cabin on a 1/3 acre at Eagle lake, CA and found this 2005 Black Beauty with 10,900 miles. $22K. I love the roominess of the C6. Its almost new and with the 2012 radio and Bluetooth Im just falling for a Black 05 all over again. I had one in 05 but got a 08 Z06 and started ruining clutches! LOL. The CD changer sound so good too. Im back to using the CD player more than the iPod. You get better sound and More Volume. If I can get Steering wheel controls I'm loving it. Gets great mileage, Passes cars easily, Costs less on insurance and Reg. Thank God for those who never drive their Corvette!

Question 1 - The 05 canbus will not work with factory switches and head unit. You can make it work with aftermarket radios but not factory
Question 2 - with a costar Bluestar unit you can only answer the phone with the steering wheel controls , u have to use the OnStar buttons or ur phone to hang up .

the costar unit is the closest thing to factory blue tooth and sounds great .

do u have factory OnStar and the onstar mirror ?

Yes I have onstar, Yes I have Onstar mirror, Also hav a 2012 USB Nav Head and can add the necessary wiring as one user has done. My concern is the CAN Bus. The Steering wheel and controls are a breeze. Can I put a 2006 BCM in?

I answered your questions in the other post ......
adding the wires is a breeze , adding the communication protocols that you need is not .......
you would be better off going aftermarket like others have stated

Thanks Dave, I guess I'll scrap the SW controls and just get the Costar as I want it all Corvette. So Music controls won't work either with the newer usb stereo as it is programmed for SW controls. Would this interfere with the CAN? Is it that the aftermarket radios don't output to the CAN?

I'm gonna make a Mock up of the S.W. Controls at the back of the radio and test it with the 2012 radio and see if it responds should be easy to hook a couple wires and a resistor and see if it switches songs.

This should be easy to mock up without replacing the S.W. and wiring. I can't see how this will interfere with the CAN. Anybody? The signal voltage leaves the radio and goes straight back to it. My 2012 radio must be programmed for it since it was out of a 2012 Grand Sport!

Thanks for your help Riveroger!!!!! I tried a SW switch mock up with a variable resistor. It works got the volume to go up and down and switch songs. Ordering a steering wheel with controls and a Costar Bluestar adapter I am Psyched! Thanks
