So a recent discussion about ignition has made me ponder the question of what type of coil do we actually have on the LS? Do we have an internally ignited coil? On the LS7, there are 4 wires per coil. 2 grounds, a power wire, and a signal/trigger wire. That to me sounds like a "smart" coil..at least in wiring language. But, they're technically not "smart" unless you can adjust "dwell" externally (like with an aftermarket ECU). Do any of you tuners out there know any place where "dwell" can be adjusted in the factory ECU tables, scalars, etc.? I've also seen some drawings that state the LS2/7 coil is an "internal igniter" coil. As seen here: This is confusing more than it is helpful. Then again, it's all super easy if you can adjust dwell in the factory computer. You can bolt in a "smart" coil, program the right dwell and be done. And products like this really make me think a smart coil would be "plug and play" in the LS7. So yeah, this all goes together nice and easy IF you're running an aftermarket ECU. But what options do us factory ECU running guys have in the smart coil arena? Lets talk...
