Hey guys, I’ve done numerous searches, but cannot seem to find the solution.
So the issue I am having just like everyone else, is my cooling fan is not coming on. It’s like it wants to work and cut out when it wants to, like it’s intermittent.
I’ve checked wires and connectors, no burnt connections at all. I believe my fan motor works, I’ve jumped it and came on perfectly fine. I am also running a Casper’s electronics manual fan controller hi/lo switch. When I first installed it, it worked perfectly fine, fans came on no problem. And today, after I stopped to get gas, I noticed my temps began to rise higher than usual, pulled over and noticed my fans didn’t come on. I’ve also checked my fuse relay, looks perfectly fine. So right now, I’m lost and don’t know what exactly is going on. I have yet to completely disassemble the fuse box to check for any roasted wires underneath, but it’s weird how the fans sometimes come on and sometimes doesn’t. At this point, I believe I have a short somewhere, unless someone can chime in and tell me different. I definitely can use any type of advice or guidance as to what I can do to solve this annoying issue.
Did you at least check the fan control module with a DVOM or test light ??…looking is not checking…the fan is variable speed which is a PWM (pulse width modulated) ground from the ECM….you either have a bad connection or bad module !!…I’d also check the aftermarket fan controller gizmo you installed…and there is no “fuse relay”…do you mean a relay or a fuse ??…there is no separate relay.
I apologize, I meant fuse. The module, I replaced new about 2 months ago.
I’m gonna jack up the car tomorrow, and unplug the Casper’s fan switch and plug it back in, maybe something got loose? I did have my radiator replaced the other day. Highly doubt this is the cause tho.
Was the module you replaced OEM or aftermarket ??…you’ll have to check all the wiring at the module to diagnose this accurately…can you also edit your profile so we know what model year and any other relevant info…mods, tune, etc…and as far as checking wiring let’s say you are checking the power to the fan (red wire) so you have to make sure that the circuit can carry the current…I use headlight bulbs of various amperages so if the fan say draws 5 amps I use a 5 amp bulb and if I connect it to the red wire and the bulb is bright I know that wire can supply the current to the fan…only checking for 12 volts is not the way to do it…it’s the same on the ground side.
Hey guys, just an update, one of the connectors weren’t fully snapped in, and at the same time, I unplugged and plugged the ECM . Seems to work fine for now, gonna monitor it and see if it holds up. The ECM I bought was brand new ACDelco btw.
Do you have a Gen 1 or Gen 2 Casper's fan controller? There were problems with some of the Gen 1s. Casper's will swap a new Gen 2 for a Gen 1 w/ no charge. You might want to give them a call.
Be aware that if you run your controller on hi a lot it can hurry up the demise of your fan connectors. (Been there, done that) So check all four of them where the Casper's harness taps into the fan power wires. The solution is to get rid of the four connectors and hard wire it all.
I would think Gen2 because I just bought it about a month. My friend that does all my work, we’ve discussed cutting all the connectors and connect them directly with heat shrink wrap.
check all the connectors to the fan, including the metal box mounted at the fan shroud. the plugs like to melt. its an easy thing to search and find info on. its literally on a post a few lines up.
i called it a metal box so he knows what to look for, i know exactly what it is.

I would assume you’re talking about the ECM, correct?
