Default Ticking noise

Hey I have come here for help,

I have a 2012 gs with h/c/i and about 5 days ago I was driving when I noticed check engine light came on. Checked it and it was a P219A code. I have yet to diagnose the problem, but as of today I was driving when I heard a louder than normal ticking noise that seems to be coming from the driver side in the engine bay. I have had no changes in performance, car idles and drives just fine. I know that ticking is fairly normal for these ls3 with injectors and lifters but honestly there would be no reason I would notice this ticking unless it was louder and more prominent. Ticking noise matches RPMs.

im going to assume that this code and this ticking noise are linked together. If anyone has had this similar code along with the ticking noise, can you tell me where you looked first? The ticking noise itself could be 20 different things along with the code, however I’m hoping that they are in combination of eachother

I'd check for an exhaust leak first. Probably upstream of your o2 sensors. Headers to cylinder head gaskets is the first place I'd look.

That would make sense to throw the air/fuel ratio imbalance code + I have done some digging and exhaust leak can come off like that ticking. Would exhaust leak ticking get quieter as engine warms up? Mine seems to be just fairly constant. However it has been subzero here in CO the past week so it’s hard to get it running to temp

As temps increase the metal expansion would make the fitment tighter

The code could be caused by a fuel trim imbalance from side to side, caused by a lazy O2 sensor. The sensor is not bad enough to cause a bad O2 sensor code.

As for the ticking, you can and use a soapy water spray to identify bubbles forming where the header connects to the head, but you'd need to do it when the engine is cold so the soapy water doesn't burn right off.

How aggressive is the cam? You could have a lifter going bad.owlance.

I haven't really paid attention to the noise changes from cold start to warm so I can't be sure. Thank you

Oxygen sensor code is for Bank 1 which is your drivers side, plus increased ticking noise from the drivers side.

Very likely just an exhaust leak.

Just replace your exhaust gaskets with a new OEM set. Could even replace the bolts if you wanted. Torque to OEM specs. Re-torque after a couple of drive cycles. Clear codes and see if they come back.

Thanks for the input. This is what I am hoping for and I will dig into it this weekend and check it out. Would be a much cheaper fix then the failed lifter + likely cam damage. Is it possible for failed lifter to throw this code?

Im not sure what specifically that code is but I would imagine a bad lifter that was severe enough to throw a code would be a pretty noticeable misfire with a corresponding misfire code.

it ended up being actually a rocker completely busted after pulling the valve cover. Cleared code, didn’t come back again

Oh wow… glad you caught it! It was sounding to me like something exhaust related. At least changing a rocker is an easy fix!
