So, is this the 1st Z06 into the 10's???
Hello fellow Z06 owners. I finally ran my car in the 1/4 after my mods: American Racing LT headers w/cats (Vette Doctor's), Air-Charger, 160* stat, ported T-body, and tune...all work done by 21st Century Musclecars, and the end result was 501.5/478 to the tires.
This thread my turn into long one, as I will attempt to give as much details as possible. Okay here we go, first, a little story about me. Those who know me, know that I am drag racers and have been for a while. My old C5 ran low tens all day long at over 138mph, but my biggest drag racing fame if you want to call it that was in my Mustang days. I raced in the Street Renegade class during Fun Ford Weekends for at least 5 seasons; my old '92 5.0 stang best run was 9.57@141mph.
Okay here are the details: The guys at 21st Century fuel me up with some 104 unleaded racing fuel...it was hot yesterday and I did not wanted to take any chances. Before leaving 21st, one of the mechanics said that I can very well possible run 11.0's today!
My track procedures after tech:
1. Park in shade/ not allowing direct sun light into motor or rear tires
2. Purchased two bags of ice
3. Remove red engine covers...releases heat
4. Front tires 48psi, rear tires 27psi (track only)
5. Remove air filter thus allowing the air-charger to feed straight into the T-body w/o obstruction (track only).
6. Position seat for racing (up right and as much forward as possible) for best shifter grip and pedal work
7. While car cools off (at least 45 minutes) I watched others to see how the track was biting.
All runs were on EMT's
Okay my fisrt run, coolant temp 166*, oil 88* (an hour and ten minutes of cool off time):
Lunch at 2800 RPM or so, slipped the clutch a little (I can still smell it), speed shifted into first two gears and power shifted into fourth all a 7K. One note, car idle funky with the air filter out, but ran like a **** on the track. At first it was windy yesterday and the wind was blowing north, the track faces North East, so I had a little wind help.
1st run
60' 1.839
1/8 7.045
mph 103.46
1/4 10.987
mph 130.69
I was in heaven, people flocked to my ride and it seemed that I spent the next hour or so in a Q/A session. Some of these same guys may chime in on this thread. One track officials/worker stopped by gave me a firm warning. I think he felt that I blew him off because I was smiling and just happy the whole time.
2nd run
60' 2.152
1/8 13.987
mph 35.98
1/4 24.512
mph 46.46
After my 1st run, I sensed that the clutch was not happy. As I pulled up with virtually the same operating running conditions as my 1st pass, the first track official asked me to lower my window and told me "we are watching you". I went around the water box and tried to clean the tires off and nothing happened, the clutch was toast (stinky). The second track official warned me again, got on the radio, and quickly told me that he was ordered to tell me that my night was done. So, I just coasted it back to the pits where many guys were like what happened, and I told them that I was ordered to park it and that my playtime was over at least for tonight it seems. So, I put my filter back in, put regular gas back in the tank, it was low (warning light), just chilled and talked to other vette owners.
Before my second run, I received a phone call from Andy; this is where the Corvette family help comes into play. Andy, another CF member showed up and hour or so after my first run, he also owns a Blk Z06. He witnessed my kicked out action and I said to him hell, if I can't play, then let's help you run some decent times. So, we began to set up his ride like mines (tires, seating, ice, engine cover and so on...he does not have an Air-Charger). I told Andy, that my goal was to help him get into the 11.40's, and get him kick out also.
I think Andy’s best was 11.5X at 126 or so. Remember folks, he is a road course racer, but he does shift pretty well.
Here is where to me the fun began, after we jerked around, talked to people and sniffed fumes from my clutch, we were plotting our next round of attack. We noticed that most people were just watching racers and looking our at cars, so I decided to ask Andy to race my car.
Some of the other vette guys were cracking up, and said hey, this may work because they are looking for me and not him. They may think that he is on his own car. So, he took it out and spun almost the whole 60', fish tailed second and still manage an 11.6 at 127 or so.
So, by now the crowd was light, the track crew was all joking and many folks on the stand wanted to see these two Z run. So guess what folks, they allowed us to play. However, I was told to keep at 11.55 or slower, otherwise you know what's up. Sorry guys, I could not help it, my competitive juices were flowing, and I had to give the crowd a good showing.
Needless to say, Andy and I were able to run back to back 5 times...heck, we didn't even turn off our cars the whole time. Andy was dead on consistent, 11.6's to 11.7's at 125 to 126. I was all over the board fighting temptations and my inner juices. Andy and I got a chance to line up twice. One race my 11.40's at 127 to 128 to his 11.8's at 125 to 126 and the second was my 11.5's to his 11.70's. Every time I came around, I was told to watch it. Well, my inner juice got the best of me again so my last two runs were: 11.38 at 128 and 11.21 at 129. That last run was funny, the guy at the time slip booth gave me this mean look and told me, "go home, you're done" while doing the bye bye waving motion.
So it was fun, the car ran strong, my clutch was slipping...Andy can attest to that as he noticed it when he drove my car. So, my second best of 11.21 with a sick clutch in a night were the temp was 73*(this is Texas), all on EMT's shows me that the tune and all the hard work was working. I have to say that it was a good night. I told Andy that if we were in Chicago or in the east coast, out times would have been much better...well more so him than me since I am making a little more power and traction may have play an issue on those EMT's.
I am making copies of my slips and taking pictures and Andy will post them for me since I don't know how. Now I have to play with the wife since I was gone all day yesterday and didn’t get home until 2am from the day before.
Well, sorry for the long thread, and sorry Paul Major and Ranger, I bet you to it...he he as far as I know.
And thanks to: 21st Century, Vette Dr's, Air-Charger and Andy for sticking your neck out for me and not wrecking my car!
Thanks.

Great time. Yours is the first 10 second slip by a C6Z, congratulations, Myhardtop. Paul Major was at 11.01 with most of the same mods as you but DRs also.
Please post all the time slip splits.
Traction was quite good and you saw the benefit of editing out the torque management, and not paying the TM toll on the launch and the 1-2 shift.
I'll have some more comments after I see the splits.
Great job.

BUT it seems like we need higher capacity clutches for these cars ....
Any suggestions???

AWESOME 10's with boltons. I have a question, why is it that you (and ranger) increase the front tire pressure so much. Is it to get less surface area of the tire onto the track in essense making the tires a little "skinnier" or is there another reason. Thanks

Congrats Myhardtop. The bad part here is another C6 Z with clutch problems. Let GM know because they still seem to think they don't have a problem with the C6 Z clutch.

Thanks for the posting, especially all the little details! Some of us live for that stuff. Outstanding.
The person who asked about tire pressure in front -- it is for less rolling resistance. If you could run high press in back and still get good traction you would do it there too, but... you can't... less pressure equals better hookup... someone who is super finnicky would even tell you that the higher front pressure also pre-transfers some of the weight to rear - also good for traction, but not sure how much of an effect that could possibly be on EMT - probably none, with stiff sides.
Fantastic 60' on that first run
