Default 18/19 vs 19/20 wheels - weight and ride?

I'm getting some new wheels and can't decide on 18/19 or 19/20. The 19/20's look so cool, but I don't want to have a poor ride and lose performance.

It looks like the tires for a 19/20 combo would be lighter if you could live without runflats. But what about the performance of the tire sizes?

Does anyone know the weights of the CCW 18/19 and 19/20 wheels?

I have researched tires and here are the results:

FRONTS 18":
29 lbs. - Goodyear F1 Supercar EMT 275/35-18 (OEM runflats) 25.6" tall
28 lbs. - Michelin Pilot Sport 275/35-18 25.7" tall
31 lbs. - Michelin Pilot Sport Runflats (Viper tires) 275/35-18 25.7" tall

REARS 19":
36 lbs. - Goodyear F1 Supercar EMT 325/30-19 (OEM runflats) 26.7" tall
36 lbs. - Michelin Pilot Sport 345/30-19 27.4" tall
38 lbs. - Michelin Pilot Sport Runflats (Viper tires) 345/30-19 27.4" tall

FRONTS 19":
30 lbs. - Pirelli PZero Rosso 285/30-19 26" tall
28 lbs. - Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 285/30-19 25.8" tall

REARS 20":
30 lbs. - Pirelli PZero Rosso 345/30-20 26.8" tall
35 lbs. - Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 335/30-20 28" tall

Thanks,

- Bill

By the way, CCW is working on a wheel like this for the Z06. I asked them to do this about 2 months ago and it looks like they will be working on it next week.

I loved the SEMA car, but I don't like the HRE prices on the 842r.

If you want to order these wheels from CCW tell John you want the same wheels that Bill Peirce wants for his Z. I think he's going to name them the SP10. The price for 18/19 is about $3,000.

These are going to look hot!

Great info about the tires.

It would be great if someone could list the weights for corresponding wheel manufacturers, OEM vs. CCW, HRE and iForged, etc. to have a true compare and contrast.

I went with 19 20 setup on my c6 and do not notice any difference in ride

But the ps2 tires made a huge difference on handeling and hooking up !

bill,

a 335-30-20 is shorter than a 345-30-20. you must have had a typo in the last 2 lines. the aspect ratio (second number [30]) means the sidewall is 30% of the tread width

as far as 18/19 or 19/20, i vote for the former. even if the 19/20 ends up a little lighter than a perticular 18/19 combo, the weight is pushed farther out in a 19/20 combo requiring greater effort to accel or slow down.

additionally, the 19/20 is a little more prone to damage from potholes ect.

imo, the 18/19 combos look nicer than 19/20. aesthetically, 19/20 combos have a little more cartoonish look to them because they seem to over power the lines of the car and the car becomes more about its wheels rather than about itself.

i have gone through 8 sets of wheels so far, ask me how i know

I too, have been on the fence about this. I think the 19/20 combo looks better, but I have bent forged aluminum wheels 4 different times on potholes - and those were with 235/40/18's that have approx 3" sidewall height from rim edge to top of tread. (which is about the same as the stock Z06 tires). I'm afraid that even though the smaller profile would look cooler, it's just not PRACTICAL on the streets.

The cost of the 19/20 combo wheels from I-forged are ~$600 - $800 more. And you have to buy new tires! ... that's another $1600 - $1800. So, from a money standpoint, it's going to cost about $2,500 more than just using the stock tires with 18/19 combo.

Additionally, you have the size differences affecting the speed and odometer readings. And, possible issues with traction control and active handling.

Now, as far as traction goes - the Goodyear F1 tires that come with the car are awesome. I drove the first Z at Spring Mountain, and I can tell you that there is NOT a problem with grip around the corners. It's also nice to have the runflat safety feature when you are out on the streets!

So, even though I prefer the "look", I am going to stay with the 18/19 combo.

Not 8 sets on the new Z?

Your right though. The 345/30 is 103.5mm(4.14in) tall on the side wall. A 335/30 is 100.5mm(4.02in) tall. So add 20 inches to that and the 345/30 is 28.3 in tall and the 335/30 is 28in tall if I did that right.

The stock rear is 26.8in so the 335/30 is the closest tire. That's a big difference though.
