[Z06] DIY - Diff Fluid Change *Z06 Specific*

There must have been a design change as my 09 Z06 has the lower oil cooler/drain fitting oriented horizontally on the back of the dif rather than vertically coming out the bottom of the dif. The fitting is right at the low point so all fluid drains out, but when the oil cooler fitting is disconnected it cannot be pulled all the way out because the rear sub-frame interferes with it. The oil will fully drain if you hold the cooler fitting against the sub-frame.
The retainer clip works the same way, just be sure to observe which way it is oriented when you take it off and replace it in the same orientation.
Thanks for this DIY.

I have some questions. First, if you need to static run the car to work fluid into the cooler, does this mean that the cooler fluid automatically drains into the rear end? If not, would running the car with no load just before refilling pump the old lube out of the cooler? Also, I am planning to replace my lube with the Royal Purple synthetic. Do I still need the friction modifier? If so, I have one anyway.

Different fluid change on FLOODED SUBMERGED C6 Z06 07
I changed my differential fluid today on my 07 z06 flood car, fully submerged car, it was milky kinda or darker then the new ls gear oil i bought at chevy dealer, is there anything special to flush it? I went ahead and pumped the 3 quarts through it and closed cap just wondering/

Replaced fluid today with Dexron LS. Car sat alot before I bought it. It is an early 2007 Z built in 2006 with only 3700 miles. I put 1600 of the miles on in the last 3 weeks (1000 on my ride home) Car had chatter when I turned in parking lots etc... New fluid definately fixed it! Job was pretty easy using the alignment rack at the dealership I work at. Only negative was bashing my hand when I broke the fill plug loose and getting that pesky clip back into place (had my friend who is a mechanic help)

Just finished changing the rear end fluid in my 06 Z06. Did it on my 4 post lift in my garage. It only took about an hour. That clip is difficult to get off and almost as hard to get on. Next time I will suction the fluid out. I did use the Dexron LS fluid that includes the friction modifier. It took about 2 2/3 quarts. I drove the car in second gear for about a minute, put it back on the lift and topped it off. It didn't take much more. I then did my figure eights.
This corrected the crunching noise I would get from the rear end on cold starts when backing out of the garage and on initial clutch engagement. My car is stock with only 14,000 miles on it.
Thanks very much for the procedure. It was very helpful

As to miles, who knows (I think GM finally came out with a spec for track use). I did mine at 49K street miles (AFAIK) and the diff fluid was pretty nasty (the tranny fluid looked good).

On whether the DIY is the same for the GS, the GS has the standard C6 dif, not the Z06 dif, so the capacities may be different. I don't know that the GS has all the Z06 coolers, either.

The manual GS has all the same coolers as the Z06 I know that, I was more concerned with making sure the fluid is the same for both the Z06 and the GS - part #88862624 (Dextron LS 75W-90).

No, the clip has to be put on after as the clip sits in a groove. If you put it on first, it prevents it from going on the fixture. If you force it on, then you have weakened the clip's ability to keep it on, potentially risking it blowing off at some very inopportune moment.

I had to have someone come over and we discovered something not previously mentioned. There are 3 notches in the groove that the clips must be aligned with or else it won't go. One can only see these retention notches if u get ur head up there w/ a light. It makes a lot of sense now why it's so hard to get them on. Try to look for these notches which correspond to outcroppings on the clip b4 u drain fluid. I'd Also have a few extra clips available cause they fly!

I didn't have any trouble with the clip.
But then, thanks to Corvette Forum I already knew it could be an issue.
So, while I give it the respect it deserved, I let it know right up front who was the boss
