Default Oil and Filter Change On 2009 Z

I know this is already on a thread but I think it is for earlier year Z"S.
Basicly I put car up on lift with lifting pucks, remove 2 drain plugs, remove oil filter, replace drain plugs, Put thin film of oil on oil filter and hand tighten. Lower car down and add oil. My big question is will the dry sump resorvoir take all 10 1/2 quarts or do I put in 8 quarts, start engine and put remainder in? Also have I left anything out in procedure?
Thank you for your input...

It will probably take all 10.5 qts but since it's your first time changing the oil on this car just put 10 qts in to be safe and run the car to operating temp (oil @ 175f +) and let sit for 5 minutes before checking level as per manual and fill remaining as necessary.

just remember the '09's require the UPF48 filter, not the regular PF48

Depending on how long you let it drain and the temperature of the oil, you will need to add a bit more than 10 quarts. I bought two 5 quart jugs and a single 1 quart container from Walmart. I used most of the two 5 quarts (about half a quart left) and started it and it was low. Added the rest and it was still low. Added most of the 1 quart and it was too high. So I had to drain a bit out. Next time I'm adding all of the 10 quarts and slowly topping it off.

My guess is it'll take about 10.25 quarts - just enough that you need to buy that over priced extra quart to make things difficult

Correct me if I'm wrong Rich but isn't the internals of the UPF48 identical to the UP48. The only difference is the wall thickness of the external shell to accommodate the higher pressure oil system of the ZR1.

The Z's oil system is the same as previous years other than the higher capacity oil tank therefore the UP48 is not a problem on "any" Z06.

If the UPF 48 or the UPF 48R that comes standard on a 2009 Z06/Manual GS and ZR1 is, "Required" for the 09 Z06 then you may be surprised to know that you'd be hard pressed to find any dealership that services 09 Z06's installing anything other than a PF48 Filter in any 2009 Z06. I've shopped, called and searched for UPF48 and UPF48R filters all over Socal and found 1 Dealership that is more than 180 miles away from San Diego that has this filter. When I asked dealerships what they are putting in 09 Z06's, every one I spoke to (More than 5) said PF48. Please take no offense to this as it appears you are affiliated with a Chevy dealership and you may use UPF48 filters based on what you quote as a requirement, these are my observations based on my recent search for procuring Ultraguard style AC Delco Filters locally.

I can't agree with that. True that the LS7 engines now come factory installed with the upgraded UPF48R filter. That is only because the LS9 is also built at the Wixom HiPo engine assembly center and it only makes sense for Wixom to stock one filter that will fit all of the engines that they build there now which are LS7, LS9 and now the dry sump LS3 destined for Grand Sports with manual transmissions. I don't interpret that to mean that the UPF48R is required for all LS7 and GS LS3 engines. UPF48R is only mandatory for the LS9.

I think the UPF48R also has better (finer filtration) internal media, stronger outer shell for higher working pressures and some other premium features over the standard PF48. Then again I could be wrong about the internals. There has never been a UPF48 as the LS9 dictated higher pressures so the UPF48R was introduced instead as the Delco Premium UltraGuard Gold filter. If there had never been an LS9 engine, then I believe the premium filter for the PF48 would have been introduced eventually as the UPF48.

I placed all 10.5 quarts at one time with no issues. Oil level checked out perfect.

To the OP:
I make it a practice to fill the new filter with fresh oil prior to intallation. Many people say it's not necessary, but I feel that it's cheap insurance. Also, you may need a rubber strap type wrench to get the original filter off. They're installed pretty tight.

Another tip:
After loosening the old filter, I punch a small hole in it with a 10 penny nail to allow the oil to drain out. Doing this eliminates the big mess when oil runs out of the top of the filter while unscrewing it. When it finishes draining, slip a zip lock bag over it, then remove.

Reguardless of if you or I agree with it, the owners manual says so.

From the 2009 Owners Manual.....

6.2L LS9 V8 Supercharged Engine 12626224 UPF-48R
7.0L LS7 V8 Engine 12626224 UPF-48R

cheers!

OK, I have an '09 motor and tank in my '06, so the car is essentially the same as an '09 powerplant wise. It seems the oil pressure is a little higher now than with the old motor. I checked on the part numbers for the oil pump in both model years, and they are the same. So it reasons the oil pressure should be the same unless there is some change to the '09 block to cause the noticed difference. What is the difference between the UPF-48R and the PF-48 that is required for the '09 LS-7 motor (other than it's color and price )? It would seem at first blush that since both motors (the LS9 and LS7) are hand built in the same place that it is easier just install the same filter (?).

I also fill my oil filter, and then install.

Not sure where it plays in the dry sump system, ( before the motor, or on the way back to the sump ), but I would not want it dry.

I have a question for those of you Z owners. I bought a used '09 Z06 with 4K miles on it that had just been serviced before the sale to me. I'll not change the oil until Spring, but ask the question, "Does the two drain plugs that come from the factory on our LS7s have a magnetic drain plug?" And if they aren't wouldn't it be a good idea to install two on my first change?

The 09's do not come with the magnetic plugs. GM stopped installing them in the early 08 production run and totally stopped making them so you'll have to find aftermarket plugs if you want go with magnetic ones.

I think it's a great idea to have them, I guess GM don't.

Thank you! I have the GM part number buried somewhere, and will try for the OEM plugs before searching the after market.
