Default 500" tall deck

Anyone out there got a 500" + CID tall deck in their Z06? Just curious as to what was done for your headers. Looking for ideas and what issues one would run into with the installation of a tall deck LS engine.

I do. Got 2" American Racing headers. It has been a pain in the ***. Had to bang one of the primaries down quite a bit, grind down the steering shaft, AND get solid motor mounts.

Motor mounts are modified to sit lower and the intake manifold barely clears the stock hood. Also had to switch to GT500 injectors so they would fit on the rails without hitting the firewall.

im talking about the ERL talldeck block. everything else fits although the alternator is almost rubbing up against whatever reservoir is on the drivers side.

it made 640hp/600tq at the wheels using almost stock ls7 heads. im sure you could make 675-700 using high dollar all pro heads and jesel rockers. the fast 102 is also a HUGE restriction. if you can find some way to fit an individual throttle body setup and get it running properly, im sure there is at least 30 if not 50 hp there. i just dont feel like spending the money experimenting with stuff. my goal is to run a 9.89 NA which should be doable at the current power level.

bought the shortblock and the modified motor mounts straight from ERL

here is a bad picture of how bad the header was rubbing against the steering shaft. we had to machine down the shaft and cut out piece of one primary and redo it. and id say i still only have about a 1/4" of room in between now.

Should note though that the ERL block has a 10.2" deck height while the RHS tall deck (for example) is 9.75" which compares to the stock deck height of 9.24"...thus at least mathimatically speaking, one might conclude the ERL could produce about double the height induced issues and other tall blocks???

Cheers, Paul.

Here is a link to one of our Tech Briefs on our website. http://www.erlperformance.com/images...imensioins.pdf
This will show you the overall height difference between our ERL 500 CI Superdeck II LS2 and a stock LS2 engine. Like Kumar stated we have engine mounts that we did that lower the engine down even further to give you more clearance. The taller deck height is actually better for the geometry of the engine. It enables us to run the 4.500 stroke crank and a really long 6.800 rod with a 4.200 bore and with our longer ductile iron cylinder sleeves only about an 1/8 pf an inch of the piston skirt comes out of the bottom of the cylinder. That is a huge plus in the long gevity and reliability of the engine so the 10.2 deck height is a good thing and not a problem. I would rather use modified engine mounts than sacrifice the reliability and long gevity of this big stroker engine any day.

Do you need to use a special intake manifold specific for tall decks, or will any intake manifold that fits a, for example, stock LS7(or 3, or whatever), fit a tall deck LS?

Kumar,
Quick question. Is the steering shaft a solid bar or is it tubing? If tubing, what is the approx. wall thickness?
Thanks,
Gary

There's no need for a 500 ci engine to make 650 to 700 rwhp.. without doing a sheet metal intake and 285-305cc heads, its a waist to go that big.. ill stick to building my short deck rhs based engine and will bet that it puts down at least 700rwhp...

True but the average torque under the curve would be monstrous.
