Speed rating doesn't mean a whole lot in this instance.

Speed ratings are developed using standardized indoor wheel tests similar to those used by NHTSA for temperature ratings. In the case of speed ratings, the tire is subjected to an indoor wheel test prescribed by the Procedure for Load/Speed Performance Tests of the Economic Commission for Europe (ECE-30). The properly inflated tire is subjected to the load for which it is rated and run on a 1.7 meter wheel. A tire must survive at least 30 minutes at speed to earn the commensurate speed rating.

This also doesn't mean the tire is going to fail at 31 minutes of run time. It just means after 30 minutes has not been tested since the test stops there.

These tests are also done at the recommended tire pressures. If the tires are not at these pressures throw all the tests and speed ratings out the window.

Low tire pressures also generate a lot of heat. I'm sure those the air pressures contributed if it were indeed a tire failure.

Just an FYI....

it looks like the tire did not come apart. The wheel is broken at the spokes. It is not the first cheap wheel that has failed like that.

I wouldn't use those cheap Chinese repro wheels for a paper weight, let alone put them on a super car. The whole rig is only as strong as the weakest link.
Look what's going to hit the ground first in this picture.....

Think any wheel would survive that? Well maybe my c5 wagon wheels..
