Default Rotor Hats.....Paint?

Going to be doing a rotor swap/ brake pad change in the upcoming week.

I wanted to do something about the to-be rust colored rotor hats....has anyone had experience in:

painting them black? steps?

Powdercoating them?

simply clearing the existing finish to prevent rust.

Any suggestions/steps will be appreciated.

Yes, just did this. I got some high heat motor paint in black, sprayed on 3 coats. (it drys in like 30 minutes) then sprayed on the high heat clear coat to give them a gloss finish, otherwise the black comes out matte. Quick and easy, you can grab the paint at any hardware or auto store.

Yup, just blue painters tape. I didn't make it too precise getting close to the center. I let a little spray get on the rotor and let my pads cut a clean circle. They turned out nice.

I believe I got the VHT header paint. It's a little more expensive than the dupi color. It's rated to 1200-1500* which is probably overkill but I don't have to worry about it chipping or fading with heat.

I wonder if you could use Dupli Color caliper paint? I've used it in the past and the gloss stays on pretty well.

i scuffed mine down with some 220 grit, then used 500 degree semi gloss black and let the overspray get outside the pad groove and let the pads scrape off the rest to a perfect circle

Black BBQ paint....no ifs and or buts. No real prep needed just spray over the rust if you choose. It stays black and stands up the the heat. I have to admit I have never REALLY heated up my rotors but I would assume if its good enough for BBQ its good enough.

Don't know if you are switching to a solid rotor or not but Centric rotors have the hats and vanes pre-painted from the factory and don't rust. They work fine for street or track and are cheap to boot.

I hit mine with a scotch brite pad then a regular rattle can of black paint I had laying around. They still look good almost two years later. I didn't tape them, just tried to stay off the friction surface best I could and the pads took off the little bit of over spray that got on there.
