[Z06] how will our 505hp Z's stack up against the '13 662hp shelby?

Who really cares? Sure it's good for water cooler talk, but I like my Centennial Z06. I don't like the GT500's. Never have, just didn't do anything for me. Case in Point. There's always a faster car, better handling car, etc. When you have a car like the GT500, it's practically built for a 1/4 mile Dragstrip. A Z06 is built as the "Ultimate" Road Track Car. Apples to Oranges.

Actually, I sort of disagree. I don't believe the Mustang is actually built for drag racing. True, it does have a live axle but that can totally be for cost and weight reasons. I think that too many people think of the Mustang as a drag car because it just doesn't do anything else very well at all.
Generally speaking, they also don't bother testing 'drag racing specific' type cars at the Nurburgring either, but here is the new GT500 doing just that:

Our well-informed sources say the stratospheric output figure, which could be as high as 620 horses, is the result of boring out the current 5.4-liter V-8 to 5.8 liters and swapping the existing Eaton M112 supercharger for the same firm’s more-efficient and quieter TVS unit. This supercharger, with its four-lobe rotors, is the blower of choice for the Audi S4, Cadillac CTS-V, Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 and, interestingly, the Camaro ZL1.
The 5.4-liter in the current GT500 makes an already pretty absurd 550 hp. The car rips to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds and through the quarter-mile in 12.4. Based solely on the horsepower increase, we estimate that the 2013 model will drop almost half a second through the quarter, for a 12.0-second run. As it is already traction limited, we don’t see the 0-to-60 number changing much. We do, however, anticipate that it’ll be a straight-up bitch to launch consistently, at least without the addition of a launch-control system. My personal belief is that traction control doesn't make your car launch any harder, it takes away wheel torque and makes the car more controllable. I also believe that even 800-0900 horsepower won't push that whale shark front end over 200 mph. By the way, does anyone else see that the mustang front end is starting to look a lot like a Dodge? And LS1/LT4, nice links, thanks.

I love the Z06...better in all areas of performance, BUT the Mustang is by far the best car when compared to its peers...Camaro, Challenger, Charger, etc...Mustang GT500 is nicer than the Z06 (except maybe the Centennial Edition), and is very mod friendly. To make a Mustang handle like a Vette takes tens of thousands of dollars, so its not worth doing. For a person who wants/needs 4 seats and wants something sporty, I don't see anything else even close to a Mustang GT500 other than the GTR, which is ugly and costly to maintain. Caddilac CTSV is nice but wont be as fast as the Mustang and not as good loking IMO.
Any stock Z06 will have its hands full in real world conditions against a competent driver in a GT500 with 600 rwhp (which is what they should be, and about 550 rwtqe) on the street. Put a decent tire on the GT500, full exhaust, crank pulley, CAI, tune, etc and it will be a ridiculously easy mid 10 second car for under $4k.
Ford made a real nice option for buyers...If you want ultimate handling, braking, and acceleration and looks, get a Z06 (if you can sacrifice daily drivability due to low stance and only having 2 seats), if you want to sacrifice some performance for convenience, and save $20k+ then get a GT500. And lets be real for a second...how many of us have taken the Z06 to its limits on the street in terms of handling and braking? Even at a track event? Its nice "bragging rights" to say it outhandles and out brakes the next car, but what does that really mean on a Friday night cruise, or at a car show, or at dinner, or anywhere for that matter?

I guess if I was in the market for a new performance car right now, the 2013 GT500 would be very compelling as would a ZL1 Camaro.
But in 2007 the Camaro was still on hiatus, and Ford dealerships were busy price gouging the iron block boat anchor that was the first S197 GT500. No thanks...
I certainly don't regret not waiting the nearly 6 years from then until now for Ford to make the GT500 this good.

After seeing the LPE ZL1 video (thanks to FNBADAZ06), I take back my earlier post that the new Mustang GT500 will break 10s with drag radials...
The LPE has about 170whp advantage and mustered a 10.79 best 1/4.
I think 10s are a little out of reach so my new updated guess is low 11s.
When's the release of that beauty anyway?...

Pull out all of the stock cars with DRs only and re-post on a separate list like we do here (CF fast lists) so that we can see out of the box times, the rest of it is useless.
