2011 carbon down with spun rod bearings
It's been a long three weeks since my Carbon #108 crapped out.
What a nightmare,,,,
started with readings of lower than normal pressure,,checked level,,
was fine,, drove up to visit a mechanic friend to have a chat about it.
was seeing approx 30psi all the way dropping to 20 at idle
then just a couple blocks away DIC says check gauges,, then 30 seconds later rattle rattle rattle. Limp into his driveway.
Some back ground on the car,, bought a US imported car at
a Canadian GM dealership in Ontario Canada. Bought with 6000kms.
This occured at 9500kms.
Called roadside,, no problem took it to a dealer in my home town.
Get a call the next morning,,, there's metal filings in the oil..
no surprises there,,, then the bomb shell,
"sorry sir but since this a US imported car that does not meet
GM Canada warranty(6mts service and OVER 12000kms) we can't touch it!" WTF??
When I bought the car I knew there were some stipulations but..
the details were never disclosed,
when doing the paperwork I asked (it was the dealship owner's personal car and I asked him) "I trust the warranty is good?? He replied yes it is."
I bought it in good faith that they would honor any warranty work.
Well in hindsight yes I should have had that in writing. Too late now.
So I called the dealer where purchased and told them my story.
Their reply was,, oh just take it to Buffalo. Ya right I can't drive it.
Well get a trailer was their answer!!!! I said that they had told me the warranty was good... well sorry nothing we can do.
Called GM Canada Customer service,,,, they would look into it but finally they were sympathetic but couldn't offer any help.
SO after some back and forth calls finally the owner of the dealership calls and offers to ship my car at their expense to a dealer in Buffalo.
That in it's self was a huge fiasco with customs,,
The car sat Thurs/Fri then Tuesday they call and say GM gave them the go ahead to work on it.
And now today they call and say "#5 #6 rod bearings spun/damaged"
and have to wait for GM to decide on the repair!!
Never in my wildest dreams did I think I'd be having these problems with a
2011 after having virtually no issues with my 07 Z that only ever had
an alternator replaced. I might as well have bought a Sonic because that's
about the level of service GM and GM Canada have given me..
Been a GM guy all my life and attend an ton of ALMS races in corrals,,
I'm just so blown away that when you buy a flagship car you don't get
any better service.
To finally pull the trigger on one of the best Z06 editions to be had,, and this
happens,,,, can't tell you how much of a bad taste I have right now!!
Honestly can't see another GM product in my garage again.
I've called around to a few other local dealers selling US imported cars and
told them my story,,, most of them are aware of the stipulations and stand
behind warrantying the car until the factory GM Canada warranty takes effect.
I'd sure want that in writing!!!

Hope they replace your LS7 under warranty.
It's no wonder to me that they came out w/the GS and now make less than 500 Z06 per year. I bet GM is losing money hand over fist on the replacement engines--they probably can't wait until c7.
I have a C5Z but after reading these stories, I'd never upgrade to C6Z.

wow i know if you import yourself they wont warranty for 6months service/and mileage...but didnt know that a Canadian dealer selling the car had to stick to the same rules..stupid GM! thought those rules were put in place to protect the dealers themselves from crossborder shopping!

OP sorry to hear about your troubles with the car...hopefully GM will do the right thing and treat a loyal Corvette enthusiast with the required dignity.

There is always a trade-off when you import a car from the US. The problem is that a lot of dealers in Canada are doing this since they can get the cars at auction for a good price. I don't mind paying a bit more for a brand new Canadian car that will have no problem being serviced and warrantied in Canada. This is something to consider next time you purchase a car.

I agree. Its bad is that GM Canada is aware of these dealers importing these cars. Its one thing for a non-GM dealer to sell these cars but I don't think it is acceptable that an authorized GM dealer can get away with this.

just got another email from the dealer in Buffalo,, still waiting for GM to decide a path forward,,,, again,, I'm really getting tired of the treatment..
too bad I love the Carbon but if this is how the "new" GM is treating customers who buy their premier products,, I feel real sorry for the guys
buying average cars,,
they have attempted ZERO damage control with their customer.
I don't even have a replacement vehicle for crying out loud!!
