Most people who determine it, determine it the hard way.

But the thing is, if you get some of it, it might or might not cause trouble right away, and you may even forget where it came from.

Boron had some crap gas out there a few months back.

This is just one way gasoline can be "tainted". Lower octane than stated can also hurt you.

it bumps compression up. if the octane isn't high enough you will get into problems with detonation. if you have 93 in your area you should fine.

I have never seen 93 in Seattle area, standard at gas stations is 87, 89 and 92...wonder if 92 would be OK to use? Thats what i currently use...

Pat tuned mine for 93. he can tune it for 91 if you'd like but there's really no need. He also backs off the timing just a smidge for saftey sake like any good tuner should do. an extra 3-5hp isn't worth the risk of detonation from bad gas.

I drive around on a nitrous tune with a the timing backed off even more. It made 580 NA giving it as much timing as we could on the dyno, backed it off the tune for spray and it made 575, so it's really not going to matter.

I made 545 cam and headers
I made 589 with cam, headers, WCCH heads, fast, n/w T/B & B&B fusions

Yeah Pat knows his stuff, my TQ numbers kinda sucked to me at 481 and that's with H/C/I. I wish I still had my factory wheels to see how much the 345/25 on 20X13 makes a difference. As far as gas goes he tuned mine for 93 and and a actual gas hauler for a living I can tell you, you can get bad gas anywhere. There's companies out there that will load a generic gas if the good stuff (branded gas) is out at the refinery. Usually go somewhere where their real busy and that means they will usually have fresh gas most of the time. Where I'm at now I fill up on conventional gas 93 with no ethanol

I have heard this before too.

I have also heard of stations filling the 92 Octane tanks with 87 Octane and selling the 87 octane for 92 octane.

Yeah that happens if we accidentally mix, the company will eat the price difference if we mix 87 into 93 while the station still advertise 93. This is vary shady as the stations don't realize some cars depend on higher octane

Milling the heads increase the compression ratio, which in turn requires more octane. With a good tune you should be fine with 93 octane.

As far as headers go.. My car dyno'd 520 with just a cam and vararam intake. I then had the heads milled .030" and installed Kooks 1 7/8" long tubes and dyno'd 557/542. I'd say the headers and milling the heads are definitely worth it.

UPDATE: Ended up getting American Racing headers and no cats along with a C5R timing chain (for my piece of mind) and all the previous listed mods. My cylinder heads have been at WCCH for about a month and should have started their journey back to TX today. Stay tuned for dyno video and numbers... should be up next week. 5 weeks without the Z feels like a freakin eternity! Almost there
