Default What springs to run with k501

Hello everyone, if Im not mistaken Katech spintron tested the k501 with the psi 1511 springs and good results?

I'm considering the psi 1515 spring.

What are your thoughts? I will be using new stock valves and titanium retainers. Below is the spintron info from katech.

. K501 cam/PSI springs/stock valves
INTAKE: .010" max bounce @ 7800RPM, tested to 7800RPM
EXHAUST: .010" max bounce @ 7200RPM, tested to 7700RPM
Install height: 1.750" intake / 1.800" exhaust
Seat: 161# intake / 140# exhaust
Open: 404# intake / 379# exhaust
Katech's recommendation: This combination is excellent for road race or street use. Recommended redline is 7300RPM assuming although due to high piston speed with a 4.000" stroke for road racing use the redline should still be 7000RPM

I'm using the PSI 1511 spring. I believe people are having a hard time finding a retainer for the 1515.

That's what I was set on as well because of the spintron testing data but my head builder is concerned about the lack of seat pressure on such a large cam.

Anyone else have any thoughts?

I went with the new PSI LS1515ML. Great spring. The only draw back is you have to use the OEM steel retainer. It's only 4 grams heavier than the titanium retainer and stops the titanium chips from ending up in the oil where the spring end chaffs

I think I'm gonna run with the 1515 spring, I've heard to many things negative about dual springs. From them breaking to putting to much pressure on lifters and causing lifter failure. Whether or not that's just Internet lore or not who knows. But I've heard good things from PSI beehives.

I used the PSI 1511, Ti/Mo intake valves, new OEM exhaust, ti retainers with K501 cam. I was sold on the spintron testing.

BTR platinums here. I don't plan to spin mine to 7700 or 7800 though. It will be a miracle if mine doesn't fly apart lol

2009 z06.
I use PSI 1511, Ti/Mo intake & exhaust valves, ti retainers & K501 cam, brodix heads done by WCCH.

My build is fairly new, but I am taking it to NJ motorsports next week. Will report back if any problems (knock on wood).

How about some of the good of a dual when one spring saves your valve from dropping?? People assume all duals are a ton of spring pressure and like singles, many options are out there.

Ill also recommend PSI LS1515ML. I'm running the 1515 with a little more cam than the K501 and it pulls clean all the way to my limiter set at 7250 with no signs of valvetrain instability.

No shimming necessary, a little bit more pressure, and most importantly a spring designed from the bottom-up to be utilized for the LS7 application of 1.950.

Tracked @ NJ without any problems .... but took it out to Watkins Glen and my motor failed with a spun bearing -- oiling issues. So i had motor rebuit with all new rotating assembly, forged Katech pistons, stock rods, stock crank, same brodix heads, K501 cam. This time I paired it with ARE dry sump to avoid oiling issues @ the track and DeWitts radior for better cooling. The motor made 710hp at the crank (on engine dyno). So far so good.

I ended running the 1515ML. American Heritage did my heads and really wanted to use the 1515 over the 1511. I was weiry because Katech always uses the 1511 with the K501. Great results a year later. About 7k on new setup and no issues. I made it to the track and ran 11.5 @ 128 mph. Stock wheels, stock clutch with nitto nto5r. I need a better clutch and some drag wheels/radials. It is just a fast street car though. Valve noise is about the same, still sounds like a sowing machine at certain rpm. I was hoping that would go away. I hear of people increasing preload to quiet it down.

Sorry to here about the spun bearing. I also run both NJ tracks and Watkins Glen (HPDE2 or 3). The C6Z is my new car for this year and I would be pissssed If the more expensive LS7 fails. My old C5Z/LS6 car was always rock solid with zero issues. Fingers crossed.

My heads are out now and getting the PSI 1515 spring. My cam is almost identical to K501 with exception of a shorter exhaust duration. I really wish a titanium retainer was available for the 1515. The 1515 should replace the 1511 in almost all LS7 applications, just no ti retainer available from what I can tell. Im running the oem steel retainer for now. If the titanium version becomes available, I'll swap them out.

What exhaust valve are you running? I'm sure the stock retainer is just fine, it's only something like 4g heavier than the Ti retainers...provided you're running an exhaust valve that's on the "lighter" side. Solid stainless exhaust valves...I'm with you, I'd be looking to shave weight anywhere I could.

Im running the hollow Ferrea, which I believe is @10g heavier than oem exhaust valve. I feel comfortable with my setup, but id feel even better with the titanium retainer and im surprised its not available.

We have talks going on with a few local specialized manufacturing shops regarding making a ti retainer for the stock setup.
We shall soon see.
